A charge like this is on a par with a local place near me that charges the on-premise price of three pints for a 64 oz. growler. And fills straight from the tap as well. Needless to say, I've never purchased a growler there.

Damn. I definitely wouldn't go back. The bar by me keeps "premium" bottles (Maine Beer Company, Pipeworks, FFF, etc.) in a cellar in the basement. They don't even charge for going to get it, and that usually takes a few minutes.

He bought the bottle 'to-go', it actually would have been cheaper to drink it at the bar.

I assume you mean living in an urban center with sky high prices on everything, like NYC, is a bad idea? NYC is about .05% (est.) of New York State, a state which has some of the most breathtaking natural beauty of any state in the country, and many, many great breweries (around 200 and counting) and taverns which are not rip offs. I think where I live, Mid Hudson Valley, NY, is one of the best places for a nature-loving fine beer drinker in the country

In PA (which has a lot of to-go beer due to the stupid case law) bars usually list the on-premise cost and knock off ~15% if you're taking it to go.

A rip off, but at least it's an option, many states where you can't to go beers from the bar...

Am I really the first person to ask if the OP actually called the place to find out what the charge is for? They can tell pretty easily what the charge is about, and if worth it to you, they might even refund the it for the confusion and lack of clarity on their part. It could be a mistake.

edit: At a minimum it would give them an opportunity to defend the charge which may provide a satisfactory explanation enough for you to go back or an opportunity for you to explain to them why you'll never go back.

It's ridiculous for any establishment to try to have its customers pay their electrical bill.

In the upper Midwest (Michigan, Wisconsin and some places in rural Minnesota) there are On/Off sale places where you can sit at the bar and drink or go over to the retailer cooler and purchase a beer to go. It is generally a little more expensive than a grocery store or even a specialty liquor store but nothing like the "Hand Grab" surcharge. Sounds like the folks in New York have been spending too much time in airports studying ways to separate consumers from their money.

In PA you typically see corkage fees almost exclusively at BYOB places, to cover glassware and service. Some places that already have alcohol licenses will also allow you to bring your bottle for a fee, but this is very rare; most licensed places prohibit outside beverages because they want you to buy their marked up products.

As others have suggested, I would call the bar in question and ask them about the charge. The first thought that crossed my mind was that the bartender might have been fairly new, and/or was unaccustomed to customers taking beer to go, and simply made a mistake. I know when I used to buy bottles to go at beer bars in SEPA, there would typically be a 20% to 30% discount off the bar price. Perhaps the bartender in this case mistakenly thought he was supposed to add an additional 20% or 30% charge for beers to go, as opposed to taking it off the normal price? Otherwise, there's nothing about this that makes any sense.

Other than the idea suggested by Boomer4ES, I can't think of any reason why a bar would want to charge customers extra money for taking a beer to go. Just the opposite seems to be the normal policy.
