Have 1.5OZ of whole leafs magnum left over that I don't want to go to waste but I'm not planning a brew anytime soon to use them with. I currently have a ruination clone in the secondary on day 9 since brew. Plan on dry hopping with centennial like recipe calls for on Friday the 16th and then bottling Monday or Tuesday. My question is what would the magnum do if I threw them in now or even with the centennial? Does anyone have any experience here with using magnum for dry hopping? Only seen it used for bittering
FUN ANSWER: Absorb wort! MORE HELPFUL ANSWER: Most reports I've read online with regards to dry hopping with magnum are negative. Lots of mentions that magnum offers minimal aromatics and that the slight aromatics offered tend to be on the earthy and floral side.
Magnum is a great bittering hop because of its clean qualities and high AA%. With its minimal aroma it might be a waste to dry hop with it. I would cryovac that 1.5OZ you have left and throw them in the freezer.
Noble hops are more suitable for dry hopping, high AA% as Magnum doesn´t work properly for this purpose.
Generally considered to have little aroma, however SN uses it as a late/dry hop in Torpedo. That's good enough for me. Give it a shot!
From playing with German and US Magnum, there is little/no aroma in the German and some in the US. One could guess Sierra Nevada is using US Magnum in the Torpedo.
Went ahead and said screw it and threw em in. Worst case I get a little less beer to bottle and some earthy flavors. Im ok with that.
Magnum for flavor and aroma is the main reason why I really don't like Torpedo. I think it is awful. Many obviously disagree.
magnum is such an effing awesome universal bittering hop (honestly, why do we need anything else for bittering? herkules maybe? maybe?) i am really interested to hear about your experience with Magnum as a late addition. i have Magnum is the freezer 365 days of the year. just add a bit, or maybe one ounce for balance, and the rest of the beer makes itself. too easy really. please let us know how it works elsewhere. Cheers.
This is what I do with Warrior. I've never used Magnum. In my two years of brewing, I think I've only not used Warrior twice. It's inexpensive, always available, high AA and adds IBUs.
put the magnum in for a total of 24 hours, checked on them by cracking the lid of fermenter and it smelled like a dirty ass mixed with some cat urine. i sanatized a small hand strainer and very gently pulled them out of the fermenter.
I did a SMaSH beer with German Magnum a few years ago. It was terrible. Very earthy, some spiciness, no floral. It almost tasted like a dirty, rotten log. I used to use it as a bittering hop for almost all my beers, but lately I have moved away from it in favor of Bravo. Ironically, it was a Kolsch that made me think that Magnum was not the best hop for bittering.
My buddy did a Magnum Pale Ale last year. I enjoyed it. It was very earthy and spicy and bitter to beat anything. A very lingering bitterness too. I'd say a small batch is worth a shot. Just so you have the reference.
