For the OP's sake, I would recommend this stop for novelty's sake, not necessarily for good beer. I really like Tugboat's shady, bookish atmosphere -and some live music doesn't hurt- but for the most part the beers of theirs I've had were pretty awful. Venture into Tugboat only if Bailey's Taproom also makes the list...

Completely agree Mudbug. I try to always sit in the bar area as well and have never had a bad experience there. I'm not a huge Rogue fan, but nevertheless, I just can't imagine going to Newport without stopping at the brewery (usually 40 or 50 rogue beers on tap, and typically they have at least a couple limited release items available).

Also, just my two cents, but I think the Green Dragon is worth a visit. They have an extensive tap list, and often they'll have something on tap I won't see any place else. It's just a couple minute walk from the Cascade Barrel house, so why not?

This... Tugboat beer is not good. Not worth the visit unless you have extra time and for the novelty factor.

Yeah, I think that pretty much nails it Brian. I used to find the "atmosphere" at Tugboat's kind of interesting/amusing, and I guess it still is (if you've never been there before), but after my last visit (some years ago now) I decided enough was enough. The trade off isn't worth it to me any more; I just don't think there's any reason to put up with mediocre beer in PDX. Also, with Bailey's right next door, across the street, I've pretty much forgotten that Tugboat is even around.

Because the OP's list is missing Lucky Lab, Apex, Beermongers and Bailey's (all within a 1.5 mile radius of Cascade).

Ouch. Smack down :grimacing: Actually, I thought the Chernobyl Stout was pretty good.
    My random sampling of one.

For the record, I think Chernobyl Stout is pretty good, too ~ one of the exceptions to the 'Tugboat Sucks' rule... :grinning:

Yes we can all agree Chernobyl is good when it is on. But too many times I have had their beers and they tasted like they were fermented in moldy, plastic buckets. It's not worth the risk for me.

One of the things we have planned for Thursday in Portland is the Pedicab East side Brew tour. (I bought the Groupon a few weeks ago). I can choose 3 stops from Burnside Brewing, Cascade Barrel House, Hair of the Dog, Lucky Lab, Green Dragon, Apex, and Beer Mongers. I was thinking HotD, Cascade Barrel House, and Green Dragon for the tour. Would Lucky Lab or Beermongers be a better choice than Green Dragon?

Also, which on my list might be best for picking up bottles (cans?) to bring home? Or is there something better yet that I need to consider. We're flying Southwest. We'll arrive in Oregon with 2 suitcases, but leave with 4. I'm like a pro when it comes to packing beer. :sunglasses:

"Would Lucky Lab or Beermongers be a better choice than Green Dragon?"

I would say no, but I'm sure others will say yes.

It's really hard to compare these three places as they have very little in common. Beermongers is basically a bottle shop, but they also have 4 or 5 beers on tap, and of course you can open and enjoy on premise anything they sell. Prices are good and they have a nice selection of bottled beer.

The LL is a brewery/brewpub, making a wide range of beers. I like their stuff a lot, but of course not everyone does. Occassionally you'll see some of their beers around town, but for the most part, the LL brewpubs are the only place where you can find their beers. Food is pretty good as well, and their prices are very reasonable. Miser Mondays and Tightwad Tuesdays are the days to go if you really want to drink cheaply.

The Green Dragon is a multi-tap pub, now owned by Rogue. The Buckman Village brewery is co-located there, and so naturally they tend to have a number of Buckman beers on tap at any given time. Despite the Rogue ownership, the GD tends to have a pretty excellent tap selection of imports and craft beer (mostly local and regional stuff). There is also a cold box with a decent selection of bottled beer to buy to go or enjoy on the premises. Prices are a bit on the high side, at least for Portland. However, that's fairly typical generally of Rogue pubs in Oregon (high prices).

The Apex pub/tavern is literally across the street from Beermongers, so arguably you could go there instead of the GD, if you want a multi-tap pub experience (Apex does not have a kitchen, if that matters to you - you can bring in food from outside if you want). The quality level is similar (I'd give the nod to Apex over GD), though of course both places have a completely different draft list.

You can find recent Green Dragon taplists on Facebook, and Apex always has their draft list updated on their website. So judge for yourself regarding tap selection. On service, atmosphere and price I find Green Dragon to range from sucks to just okay. I feel confident you won't find many BAs recommending Green Dragon over Apex.

Beermongers is across the street from Apex. Enjoy a 20oz pint on draft for absurdly good price while you browse a great selection of bottles for exceptional prices (you will not find better in Portland). If you break a six pack, the price per bottle is simply 1/6 of the six pack price (you won't find that luxury at Belmont Station, despite Belmont having a larger selection).

OK another question. Tomorrow we land in Portland and we're going to Bend. Since it's going to be near impossible to get to Boneyard before they close, we're going to Three Creeks for our first stop of the Bend Ale Trail. So the question is, which route would be preferred to get from PDX to Three Creeks in Sisters, to Bend? Option A says to go through Salem, which I haven't researched anything in that area. Option B says to try and past by Mt. Hood, which the only beer related news I've looked up is Mt. Hood Brewing. What do you think?
(We'll be sure to stop at Boneyard Monday before we leave Bend)

Oh, and what is the local opinion of platypus pub?

I recommend Option A: I-5 to Salem, then 22 to 126. It's a very pretty drive (although there's rain in the forecast tomorrow) that will take you right through Sisters. We just went this way to Bend over Memorial Day weekend. I think you can skip Mt Hood in lieu of a more direct & scenic route. Use this: http://goo.gl/maps/nQo5

    I second Brian's recommendation.

The GF and I took a scenic drive on Hiway 26 up around Government Camp a week ago last Sunday, and right now there is a considerable amount of road contruction going on just past Government Camp. It appeared as if part of the road had been washed out, resulting in considerable delay going through there (one lane with a flagger letting cars through). It wasn't too bad on the Sunday morning we drove through, but if there had been a lot of traffic, my guess is that waits to get through could be considerable.

    Excellent! You guys rock.

I would have guessed the Mt Hood route would have been the more scenic drive. There's more terrain that way at least. Avoiding road work is a good plan too. Glad I asked.

It's been crazy! Here's a recap of what I actually accomplished of my great big to-do list:
All 10 stops on the Bend Ale Trail +Crux
    Flat tail(awesome!)
    Block 15
    Beir one
Rogue brewery & public house, Newport
    Pelican pub
    Full sail
    Double mountain
    Big horse
    Beermonger
    Lucky lab
    Cascade barrel house
    Hair of the dog
    Burnside
    Belmont Station
    Horse brass
    Widmir gasthaus
    Amnesia

It's 3ish and next stops are breakside, HUB bikebar, Lompoc Sidebar, upright, the commons, & baileys. Not quite sure on the order of those. I think those will all work in.

Thanks for all the recommendations along the way!
