These are going to be very elementary, because I just don't feel like writing more in this post, but feel free to PM me if you want more specifics. If you just want the answer to "how long does this person say I should age this stuff?" My answer would be 3-5 years.

    First, a Picture:

    Results:

06 - Metallic Smell, Metallic Taste in beginning (ut-oh). I know the trader I got this from and he more than likely keeps them well, so it may be fading off? I'm not sure how long these hold up (I know that it has won some aging/cellaring contests), but this one is headed downhill...fast.

07 - Wow! Strong fruit, low booze, no significant hop presence...so smooth. This was my personal favorite. Makes me reconsider (more confused) what may have happened to the 06.

08 - Wow! Less fruit, more bitterness & cocoa, no significant hop presence...smooth. This was my friends personal favorite. Thanks to a fellow BA for this bottle that completed the vertical (can't remember his username, but he's from California and I remember him making multiple runs to pickup beatification for people)

09 - The hops are minimally back and the fruit seems to be muting, still strong cocoa, not as bitter.

10 (early batch) - more hops, fruit is muted a good amount now, strong cocoa still.

10 (late batch) - very similar to early batch

11 - hops are now fully present. It's hard to taste the fruits. When I think of expedition stout, this is what I historically would consider it to be. This is probably cause I usually drink it with 6 months to a year of age on it.

12 - overly hoppy compared to the rest. I don't think I'll drink this beer fresh again...and I love a strong hop presence, but not so much in my stouts, especially this one.

*Overall, each beer changed pretty drastically as it warmed up...Expedition is one of those beers that just gets better and better as time goes on, both in the bottle, and in the glass.

Awesome stuff. What is the date on the 12? I thought it came out in the fall/early winter

I don't know about the OP, but I have a 6-pack of the '12 Expedition Stout in my cellar that's dated 1-10-12 or 1-14-12, something along those lines.

I have had a bottle from 94 and was certainly impressed by it. Expedition can stand up to some serious age, it is unfortunate the bottle from 06 did not fair to well.

Yep, I've heard only positives about aged expy, so I was surprised. I have 5 more, so I'm hoping those are still solid, we'll see.

What kind of fruit were you getting in the earlier bottles? I don't believe I've ever had Expedition more than 2 years old and never notice much of a berry presence.

Dark plum fruit flavor. I almost alway get it from a bottle of Expy.

Yup, Plum/Raisan flavor. Let it sit awhile and that flavor shines through more and more.

Very cool. Maybe I should pick up a bottle and save it for a while.

I wish I was into craft beer about 10 years ago, around the age of 15, and started to cellar and save beer then. I could have a wicked Bigfoot/Expedition vertical.

Matt and I can never align our schedules to meet it seems.

I would crap myself if I could have an Expedition from '94. Just reading that makes me want to keep my '10 until like 2025...
