Next Ba meet up, Bamberg or Berlin?

If I were able to go (April? No can do...) I would opt for Bamberg....

Bamberg

 

I'll be in Germany May 1st - 9th. I expect to be in Bamberg starting on Tuesday the 5th and stay until Saturday. Hope it works out!

 

I don't know how this didn't occur to me until now, but if it works out that you are in Bamberg at the right time, you should definitely stop at Klosterbräu for their Maibock.

 

I vote Bamberg... but we'll need to stay in a hotel probably... why not make it in summer, June, July or Aug? Then we can make a weekend out of it, arriving Saturday and leaving Sunday, and weather permitting, doing a bike tour of the places. I've only ween Bamberg in the winter, so I'd love to see what it looks like with leaves and flowers on the plants.

Does this still happen?

 

The closest thing I ever saw to this was in Berlin during Männertag, guys walking around the Alexanderplatz with a case or two of beer in tow, in those little red children's wagons. Whether or not that was part of a Kastenlauf I don't know.

Klosterbräu's Maibock is one of the best beers I've ever had, definitely report back if you get to try that one. Actually, report back no matter what, we'd all love to hear about your trip!

 

I went to Munich for Frühlingsfest (Maibock time) a few years back and made a side trip to Bamberg. Found a few Maibocks in there too.

 

These Männertag things you saw were Jungesellabschied or Batchler parties. Those with the kiddie ago full of beer are the unimaginative ones and incredibly cheap to boot. It means they won't be allowed into a bar with it, and probably they'll just trundle around the city hitting up chicks being extremely loud, rude and stupid drunk in public.

 

I will make sure to report back either way. I have outlined about 25 breweries around Bamberg I'd like to visit so I'll be paring that list down of course.

Thank you for the information on the Kastenlauf. My days of trundling around looking for chicks is likely in the past.
