I will admit, I was quite fond of that xocovesa (sp) beer.

Then again, that wasn't even technically their recipe was it?

I'm just giving you a hard time! I don't even know what Fat Head thing you're talking about. I don't drink a ton of either brewery but they are both in the rotation!

I actually drink a ton of both, but not the collab sadly.

BTW i dont get offended like ever, I was just posting on the internets and seeming offended when im not.

Totally agree, as I already pointed out their best releases (aside from IRS and their slew of IPAs) are collabs and homebrew contest winner recipes. Their beers are so f'ing meh aside from their IPAs and stolen recipes.

Ha, good! I'm the same way. Naturally sarcastic, but rarely serious.

I guess Brasserie Dupont and Fantome are not world class brewers since they brew mostly only Saison, or Cantillon since they brew mostly only Lambic, Traquair since they only brew Scottish style ales, or Weihenstephaner since they only brew a handful of German lagers and wheat beer.

So, Stone focuses on hoppy beers? The beer industry, including other breweries, are better off for their efforts and innovation in the realm of hoppy brews which, in turn, passes on to you the consumer as you sip on a better brewed IPA. Ask any brewer around, Stone has the right formula by staying true to their roots, making world class beer, and doing it on a scale most breweries dream of.

Trademark law is a a huge slope requiring a lot of legal discretion and judgement when choosing which cases may infringe a trademark. Some lawyers/business owners are better at it than others. There is no black and white test for when to defend and details matter.

I'd put Fyodor's Classic, Mikhail's Odd, Bastard in the Rye, and Southern Charred all in the "world-class" category. Not to mention SSR (at least top-5 in category) and the other Bastard variants. Sure, a lot of those rely on hops, but that doesn't make them IPAs. If I tried, like, five beers from a brewery, most of them (by my own choice) in the same category, I'd probably have enough sense to keep my opinions on that brewery to myself.

My definition of a World Class brewery means a brewery that has an arsenal of phenomenal beers of several different styles, so in that way, I wouldn't consider them "world class."

And they seemingly decided that to make beers that actually ARE more unique/"out there", they need to do it under a different name (Stochasticity), as if they're hesitant to release non-IPAs under the Stone name. Just bizarre to me.

neurobot: I didn't realize 17 ='d "like, 5", and by choice? It's not my fault that the majority of what I see on the shelf from them is an IPA.

    "stolen recipes"? Laughable...

I think Stone does ONE beer per year that's a collab with their homebrew competition winner and another brewery. The rest are other breweries collaborating. Collabs w/ Green Flash and Port were "stolen recipes"? Collabs with Drakes, Blue Jacket, Stillwater, Bear Republic, Victory, Dogfish Head etc...to name a few. I highly doubt were "stolen" unless your magic eightball tells you something different.

Stone Smoked Porter is a great Porter.
    Their IPA's are fantastic.
Not a fan of PA or their Amber but to each his/her own.
Lagunitas makes awesome beers as well.

I'm going to guess that Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas had some issues before this matter. I can't imagine they were buddy, buddy before this. I think everyone respects and understands a property and that a company needs to stand up for what they think is theirs. If Sierra Nevada released a beer called Sierra Nevada sucks or Hairy Eyebrow people would understand. But to try to claim the letters and font of the term IPA is just petty and ridiculous. Actually for me worse than the lawsuit is lack of understanding as to how the lawsuit would be perceived on a site such as this. If Lagunitas did indeed drop the lawsuit because of the reactions of their customers in forums such as this one then they are truly making very rash and antagonistic decisions. Their company will suffer from this type of poor vetting of internal discussions and actions.

I disliked both of those as well. I realize I was in the minority but I thought both of those beers were poor

I wouldn't be too sad about it. Stone is in the business of selling beer. Actually they have really reinvented themselves over the last couple of years. In San Diego the big three are Stone,Green Flash, and Ballast Point. In my opinion Stone has actually done the best job out of these three in most categories

    1. Worldwide expansion
    2.Expanding existing lineup
    3. And what they are best at which is marketing. Aside from their two restaurant/ breweries being true destination type spots they have helped other breweries with distribution and have been the greatest momentum for the mammoth growth of the San Diego craft beer movement.

So, then what are world class brewers by your definition?

Alright not "stolen." Just not their own, original recipes. Corrected.
