I will trust the brewer and let it sit for a year. I certainly wouldn't post on here about how terrible it is almost a year before the best after date. I'm excited to try it for the first time.

I bought 2 bottles today: one to drink now, and one to squirrel away for a TBD number of years. The "fresh" one was utterly spectacular. My wife added it to her "best beers ever" list, along with (in order of best-ness) 2012 BCBS, 2014 BCBS, and 2013 BCBS. I'm not sure if I would take things to that level of hyperbole, but it was really, really good. I can't wait to crack my 2nd bottle open in a year or two to see how it is then.

Same here sir, same here I purchased two before it was game over at my local. I was surprised they had more then enough when I originally purchased them.

I recently had mine prior to the major holidays & have to agree, it was surprisingly good for a barleywine (iirc).

    BTW, you rock (thumbs up)

Agave maria cannot be compared to the abyss as it's not considered a stout whatsoever. Though i did enjoy it & have one bottle aging currently, it is a bit syrupy to some degree.

I bought 2 recently in a trade. I got chastised by the brewer or someone who works at the brewery about letting 1 age. He said they brew their beer to drink now and aging isn't necessary or likely to improve the beer. He even went as far as to indicate that it might not improve at all. What is everyone else's experience regarding aging of this beer and others in particular? I've noticed a couple that I aged recently defined in taste significantly and they were aged only 1 year.

That's odd, because this is a direct quote from Deschutes' The Abyss web page:

As for the great "drink it now or let it age" debate, we stand clearly on the fence. Distinct and delicious on release, the flavors meld and fuse into an entirely different pleasure after a year or more in the cellar.

    Thanks!

Word from Specs beer guys is that the alcohol % labeling was off by a hair so it's not going to come to TX. I'm a sad panda...

I just picked up a bottle of 2014 from my local specs in West Texas yesterday. I'm contemplating whether I should open it now or in a few months.

I drank one last night and it tasted great, though I had 2 bottles so I was able to give it a shot on how it tasted fresh.

Yeah don't they have a drink after date on the bottle?
