Visiting Seattle (Winter 2015 Update)

I would argue that adding cream and sugar to coffee roasted and sourced by a good 3rd wave coffee roaster is akin to taking a beautiful craft pilsner and putting it through a randall of shitty hops and putting an orange in it. Sure it might taste like beer, but you are completely altering the brewers intent. I may be a snob, but I think you should consume and imbibe in the way the creator intended. If you don't like it, then you don't like it.

I agree with you. I am close to as passionate about coffee as I am about beer. Shameless off topic question: What is your coffee brew set up like?

If you're implying that's the same thing, sure. I can't imagine there will be much agreement with that.

To return to topic, visitors should be aware that we have lots of terrific coffee shops and roasters. Just keep your cream and sugar at home.

 

oh c'mon, it's coffee, and just like beer, the majority of people drink it for its effect rather than taste. i cut my coffee every morning with a little cream every morning because it's delicious with cream. hell, most espresso drinks include a diary component for that exact reason - to enhance the flavor, mouthfeel, etc.. you're speaking nonsense man! nonsense!

 

To me, it depends on the coffee varietal (or blend), the roast, and your palete. A bold, dark roast can be smoothed out with dairy and enhanced even without losing any flavor, because it's slapping you in the face. Now that more subtle, medium roasts are appearing in Seattle (finally!), you get the "um, don't put cream in that." Real Kona gets stepped on by dairy. I bought something recently from Zoka that lost something with cream. I also think some quality medium roasts are enhanced by dairy. No set rules--taste for yourself. Just like beer.

However, only bad coffee needs to be saved by sugar.

 

Won't be my fault, I hate coffee.

But back to beer: Does anyone know if I can get Fremont or Bale Breaker in the 'Couv (WA)

sorry you guys, got a little steamed a couple posts ago. had one too many coffees with cream earlier today. i'm drinking some craft beers to calm myself down. all is well, carry on.

 

Just came to Seattle or an overnight and although I did not hit any of the spots on the list I DS go to Aqua for dinner and it was amazing. Food was excellent and the super goose DIPA on tap was great. Cloudy with sediment and drank very well even when not chilled

 

Fremont in the Couv, yes. Bale Breaker I don't think so.

 

Great thread! I've been in Seattle for a few days and this thread has been a great resource. I made a trip to The Pine Box where I tried Savant IPA, Black Hole Sun, Astral Projection, and Double Trouble. I plan to stop at Full Throttle on my way to the airport for some B Bomb, etc., Salud!

Not sure how you feel about traditional English styles but almost right across the street from Full Throttle is Machine House Brewery. All of their stuff is served on cask and super drinkable. A unique place and one of my local favorites.

Staying in Seattle this Friday night - is there anywhere beer-related worth visiting in the Queen Anne area? If there are no bottle shops or grocery stores with good selections nearby, which shops would be easiest to hit driving in/out of town? Like everyone else who visits, I'm hoping to pick up some b-bomb and variants that might be left. If there's anyone near QA that wants to do an IP trade, I can bring stuff up from Portland - just send me a PM. Thanks!

 

The Masonry and Holy Mountain Brewing are in the Queen Anne area. Not sure about spots to pick up bottles. There's a Whole Foods a little further North from Holy Mountain.

 

That Whole Foods has a terrible bottle selection, and really a terrible selection of just about everything. I hate that place.

You're better off hitting a bottleshop on the way out of town - Bottleworks, Chucks, etc

 

Sounds like the Whole Foods in Bellevue.
