I'll be in Asheville next week - curious if there are any beer releases or events going on during that time period. I haven't seen much online. A friend said Burial was releasing some neat stuff during that time.

    Locals?

Thanks for the heads-up, guys. Hopefully we can score some bottles of Bootsy while we're there - the lineup at Burial sounds great:

    Fonta Flora Brewery:
    • Urban Monk: Defiant Whisky Spiral Aged Imperial Stout
    • Monk’s Table: Parti-Gyle/Urban Monk Second
    • Hop Beard: Mountain Man IPA
    • Beets, Rhymes and Life: Local Beet Saison
    • Salted Rye Saison
    Green Man Brewery:
    • St. Hubbins Belgian Dark Strong
    • 2013 Holly King
    Burial Beer Co.:
    • Skillet Donut Stout
    • Pollination Honey Saison
    • Scythe Rye IPA
    • Millstone White IPA

Most asheville breweries are over rated. Go to wicked weed - they have all the best sours. Plus theres a good bottle shop that you can drink in too but i can't remember the name of it. Its pretty big though and has Breury beers for a good price for being so far from cali.

If Bootsy is as good as Green Man's last couple of sours, then it will be significantly better than anything that Wicked Weed has done up to this point. Of course, that's a big "if."

I live about an hour and a half from Asheville, I'm up there a good bit. I was simply looking for specific events going on next week. Thanks.

Maceo was great - wish I had more of it. Green Man is doing a very good job of it. I like Wedge & Burial a lot too.

What makes Asheville so wonderful isn't just the brewing - it's the area - and THE FOOD - MY GOD THE FOOD. It's foodie paradise, fantastic restaurants downtown - walk - drink - walk - drink - walk... you get the picture.

I think people hold their expectations too high nowadays. Some breweries in Asheville may not have the best beer, but several of them still produce a high quality product and put a lot of hard work into their craft. For me personally, sometimes just the atmosphere, the people, and some beer is enough to make it great.

Man, @aleckpa and @Mantooth are about to make me plan a new trip asap

As they've both alluded to, the best thing about Asheville is the vibe. Everyone is just happy as hell to be there and to be enjoying themselves. When I got married there in May, our guests just kept commenting about how there was a palpable energy to the town that was unlike other places (particularly other smallish towns). And it's undeniable. It's just flat out more fun to be drinking next to someone who is happy as a pig in shit to be there just to be hitting up breweries. I also find that the average drinker there is much more knowledgeable about beer than the general public and can't wait to discuss it with you.

And yeah, it doesn't hurt that you can close your eyes and walk in any direction and end up at a restaurant that's the bomb.com

I personally think Wicked Weed is the most over rated brewery in Asheville. Yes, they produce some quality beers, but they are not always better than other breweries in town. And this comment is not against Wicked Weed, but how the mass of people that come to Asheville focus all of there attention on Wicked Weed while not truly appreciating the strengths of other breweries. I think Green Man produces better sours than Wicked Weed because they actually let the beers mature rather than rushing out a product just so you can sell it. I think Burial produces saisons that are just as good as Wicked Weed. I will say that Wicked Weed produces the best hoppy beer and stouts. With that being said, the main breweries I go to in town are Wicked Weed, Burial, and Green Man. I will go to Asheville Pizza and Highland, but that is mainly because of my young kids. I think APB and Highland produce good staple beers, but nothing phenomenal.

Burial definitely does better saisons than WW, but Fonta Flora does them better than both IMO.

Fonta Flora, man. I'm trying to keep them a secret, but they are constantly and consistently producing amazing brews.

You're up in Hickory, right? You're close to Fonta Flora. I love their space, great vibe and killer beer. My girl and I went last year, with Andy Alexander & his wife. There was an oyster festival going on - which I highly recommend you look up and checking out. We decided to spend the night and drink and found out the hard way that you cannot get a cab in Morganton. Great beer and a neat little town, couple great restaurants too.

    Definitely huh? Perhaps for you.

The reality is all make awesome beers. Only had flora once so far though, I'll keep checking them out.

    My opinion on asheville:

Must hit places- wicked weed, funkatorium, burial, Greenman. Only stopped once but One World had a cool location and vibe. Beers were good with a couple great. It might be added to my must hits soon.

For me, my 2 least favorite places were Twin Leaf. Stopped 2 different times and haven't liked a thing really. I'll be skipping them from now on. Also, the wedge. People love it to, so maybe it's me. Beer was average and location is cool but not as convinient so I'll likely skip it going forward as well.

That said I'd suggest everyone hit as many as they can and make up their own minds. Bottom line is asheville is a terrific place and everyone can find something they think is amazing

Burials Skillet Donut is one of the best Stouts brewed in Ashville

I agree with you about Wedge. I didn't care for it all. The only beer I thought was decent there was the Raspberry Stout.

I'm not as big a fan of Burials Skillet Stout, it is good, it is worthy for consideration but it doesn't top Milk it or Milk and Cookies in my book, on par with French Toast though. That's my opinion.

Strange thing about Asheville, like someone posted above, I to had only been to Twin Leaf 2 times, and both times couldn't find anything acceptable to drink, then darn it all, I went back a 3rd time. Low and behold, there sat a very well crafted lager, shoot, shoot, shoot, now I have to readjust my "go to" schedule. This lager was on par with Hi Wire's Lager (the best in Asheville in my opinion).

Now I can't say, skip Twin Leaf.

It is my Wedge Brewing issue all over again, Wedge makes that one beer that I really enjoy, their Pilsner.
