I agree with you on the return part of your take on it.
Not sure where you're pulling those numbers from though.
I suspect it's at least 25% if not higher.

Just cause it tastes "decent", but has low carbonation, still makes it a defect.
And I'm seeing quite a lot of people post with some sort of imperfection.

Absolutely any percieved defect should result in returning the product.
I tossed out a % range for sake of example. But based on responses on this thread (and the fact that 2 of my 4-pack were dead solid perfect, haven't openend the other two yet) we know the number isn't 100%. Many cans are indeed perfect. So the only action for anyone to take is to return those that are underpar. Unless the batch is 100% bad or we learn that drinking an undercarbed one will sterilize you (maybe a benefit for some BA's I know) or kick off the zombie apocalypse - they should stay in the coolers and treated on a case by case ( uh, maybe 4pack by 4pack) basis.

Can I ask what dates were on your cans?

I just got a 4 pack of Abrasive from Liquor Boy, dated 1-13-15 in white. Lets hope they are good!

Edit: I capitalize random words while typing...

Not in front of me at the moments (at work... shhhh). But I believe 1/13/15 from Golden Valley Liquor Barrel.

My France44 order arrived yesterday. Cracked open an Abrasive last night...zero carbonation. It's the 1/9 batch. Just a downer in general. Obviously it's not France44's fault, nor do I expect them to do anything. Might be different if I lived in MN, but I'm not going to pay to ship the beer back to MN for a credit or new cans, ya know?

You deserve what you paid for - nothing more or less.
If you received defective product from an online retailer, I would assume they have a return/refund policy to help remedy such events.
@BeerBuyerBill , can you please help with this question, and perhaps point BeerGreg in the right direction.

I disagree. If let's say 15-20% of the cans are not up to Abrasive standards, every Abrasive should be recalled. If it is ok to just ignore these carbonation issues, why not just get rid of all quality control at breweries because the consumers can bring back any purchase that is bad.

Maybe those getting flat cans are reaping some twisted beer karma for too much hemming and hawing over the years on BA?!? Have we considered that?

Honestly, I think 25% is way too high. With Beergregs above post, we've now received a total of 5 comments from customers about this issue. In the last 4 days, we've sold over 400 4pks of Abrasive.

for those in the area, 1/12 cans are available at the MGM in Minnetonka. $17.99 though.

I bought a whole case (canned 1/9) online from France44. Spent over $100 and so far, I've had 2 cans with one being a little flat and another VERY flat. I guess I'll contact the online retailer but damn, what do you think they will do? It's not like I can stroll on over and take them back, I'm in Indiana. Major disappointment, $100 for flat beer just isn't acceptable

How many consumers know the difference between a perfect Abrasive and under carbed one (ranging from completely flat to slightly under carbed)? How many that do know the difference actually take the time to complain or return the product?
Since Surly is aware that they did release a defective product in some capacity I would think they would take more initiative to rectify it.

And that would be what? Reasonably speaking, what should they be doing? Pulling all of it?

Has Surly made any comments on this yet?

I have never had an issue, but for some reason I can picture Omar jumping into that extra tank they installed, which is filled with gold doubloons, scrooge mcduck style :grinning:

Well you're entitled to your opinion. But no manufacturer (of any product) will do that unless there is a serious consequence from the defects. And from a practical matter, most of this batch has already sold out - meaning it is in the consumers hands. The only way to 'recall' is to have every on of us physically return them to the stores or brewery. And if you have some of the good ones, do you now have to return them? Can't just say mine are fine and enjoy them?

Respected opinions aside, your last sentence is plain moronic exaggeration. Any manufacturer (beer, cars, shoes, mailboxes, whatever) taking a 'no quality control' approach would cease to exist in very short order for a multitude of reasons to long to list here.

In the meantime take your beer back to the store if it's defective, get your money back, the store and distributors will work their end out with the brewery. Surly can continue examining the issue and be ready for the next batch (don't know why you think they're ingnoring anything just because there hasn't been a complete recall).

I've had 2 cans dated 1/10/15 and one was pretty lightly carbonated (only 1/2 in. of head that dissipated quickly) and one that was a little more carbonated. If memory serves, Abrasive doesn't have a ton of carbonation when perfect so I wonder if people's expectations are a little skewed. Regardless, the 2 cans I had were not the same, which I assume is any producers objective.
I'm a little disappointed that Surly hasn't addressed this other than by acknowledging the issue. The way companies deal with issues says a lot more about them than how they act when things are going well. Maybe there is more to come...
BTW - the flavors in both cans were great.

Yes and not just because maybe only 5% of the cans are bad but because the reputation of Surly is worth much more than the effort to recall any unsold cans.

People still make comments about Central Waters beers wondering if a bottle is defective even if they are just joking. Better to fix & apologize asap IMHO.

Great news! I got mine finally (I don't live in the twin cities area) and it was perfect.

Cans dated 1/12/2015. 1 inch head of foam (didn't even have to pour hard to achieve it) and all the flavors I know and love were there.
