Can't agree more with point # 1, had this on tap tonight, very tasty, thanks Sixpoint!

What was your detailed analysis? We did do a similar thing with the Diesel, but the BEAST MODE has a different vibe to it. We wanted all of the flavor of the dark malts, but without the acrid nature or astringency you can get. Its a deceptive beer because it looks like it would taste much darker than it is.

how did you like the Hi-Res on draft?

we would love to do that...but instead we will work on making the 2016 release even better!

yeah...don't let "style guidelines" confuse you...taste a beer for what it is, not what someone else told you what it is ;-)

how did you like th eBeast Mode!

actually has a fairly big body from an OG/AE perspective...but deceptively light because people are used to having sugar maple syrup bombs for porters ;-)

    no skittles though

Since you expected it...what are the issues?

Nice! This is a beer that I actually liked better out of the can vs. on tap, but then again, it was in a crowded bar that night and it was served in a shaker pint...

    that's why I wrote the review :-)

"From afar it's darker like a porter, but it's really brown with a reddish tint around the edge. Smaller beige head reduces quickly, but sticks around. Smell is a bit timid, like wet, old, roasted malts. Unfortunately not all that appealing. Initial taste is like watered-down root beer, or stale coffee, and features a thinner body. I don't get any of the char, or moderately sweet cocoa that I associate with the best porters. As a porter, this is far off the mark; it's a brown ale with some hoppiness. I love Sixpoint, but I think they really missed the mark on this one."

will you concede that much of your review's criticism is based upon your expectations of what you think a porter should taste like, vs. what a porter could taste like?

some of it, for sure, but some of the issues were with the aroma, which I did find stale and lacking, and the mouthfeel, which was way too thin for my personal liking. everything else was based on considering it a porter. I'm going to drink a couple more of the sixer I bought though, just to be sure (the rest I'll probably drop in as extras to friends in non-Sixpoint markets).

    Cheers!

BEAST MODE will be back in 2016, no doubt. We will be taking into consideration such as the feedback you suggested during our continuous improvement in the formulation. That being said, we do encourage you to think outside the box and preconceived notions on what beer styles should taste like, vs. what beers could taste like.

If you throw the porter "style guidelines" out the window this beer still isn't very good. Muted nose, nothing earth shattering in terms of taste and rather thin in body. My $0.02 - your mileage may vary.

fair enough, that's why I'm going to try a few more, but...
    this

as noted above, Smuttynose's Durty is an excellent take on a hopped brown, and I'd choose that 10-times-out-of-10 over Beast Mode in its current incarnation

This is all excellent feedback. We're not shooting for a "hoppy brown" but we certainly are not shooting for a "muted nose" either, or a thin body.

It basically should have all of the zestiness and drinkability of an IPA, but with the dark character of a porter.

Color wise, it should be closer to a true English porter, which is a deep red/brown rather than a pitch black.

Already amped about what 2016 will bring...

So far after trying this on tap (in Brooklyn) I was not impressed. Will have to give it a couple more tries though just to be sure.

I'm with the other guys about it seeming thin in body, but I did like the taste. I have five left, so I'll be revisiting this one soon. Overall, good stuff.

Al this talk made me "revisit" it right now. Getting both citrus and coffee from the aroma. Although it did remind me of Smuttynose Durty last night, I think it definitely has its own thing going on.

Tried my first can of this tonight and all I have to say is:

Thank you all you guinea pigs who got to try this one before me and posted their experiences here. Knowing not to expect a standard "porter" made a huge difference, and having read the reviews and your descriptions proved quite helpful (which isn't always the case). Not sure this ones a favorite, I don't see myself returning to this, but it did grow on me the more of it I drank. Seems like a fusion of a english brown IPA/english porter IPA.

    Shane.......my detailed analysis?

    It tastes pretty freakin' good!

Seriously though, it is an interesting beer; I like that it kind of steps into some new ground, a porter without the typical dark malt roastiness seems a bit odd at first, but it grows on you with each sip....very subtle and very well done balancing act between the hops and the malt profile, unlike any brown ale or porter I have had in the past ( I do miss your Brownstone though!)...

All in all, a winner in my book - I bought a case of it this past weekend!
