Interesting. I'll assume the pugachev isn't as hot fresh?

Glad to hear about the LSD. I have one that I have been wanting to open with my share group. I guess that will happen soon.

I'll agree with the others that I wouldn't go out of the way to get my hands on Mocha. Good beer but nothing too special. Pugachev Maple (which might be worth trading for) wasn't ready yet so they created a Pugachev Movha to fill the spot.

I liked royale much more than the mocha. Mocha was hot and thin, it smelt amazing though. Royale was just awesome.

The longer you wait, the tougher it will get to land one. It appears to be gaining more and more recognition.

    Off topic but ...

Does anyone know where this green peppery aroma comes from? Is there a particular chemical we can point to - e.g. diacetyl for buttery flavors? I get the vegetal / green peppery thing a lot from some of the Pipeworks Abduction beers and, recently, an overwhelming flavor of it from Trillium's PM Dawn. In the PM Dawn case it was a coffee beer but many of the Pipeworks beers are not coffee beers ... so I'm not sure if this sometimes derives from coffee.

    Thanks!

I've seen that before ... and the green pepper flavor in particular isn't mentioned, just vegetal. I guess I'm wondering if the "encourage fast, vigorous fermentation" recommendation is the specific cause in big stouts. Assuming Pipeworks, Trillium, and Hangar 24 don't have contamination and aren't using bad ingredients - maybe not a fair assumption, but they're all pretty reputable and make a number of really excellent beers.

Guess I could / should post this in the homebrew thread.

    Thanks.

I think that description of "vegetal" really is more of a rotten vegatable aroma/flavor. It is referring to really slow primary fermentation that takes so long that there's time for bacteria to enter and take over, causing an infection. I doubt that's the case with the breweries you mentioned.

The only time I've ever perceived a noticable green pepper flavor/aroma is with really old coffee stouts. I had a particularly bad experience with a bottle of CBS that was ~2 years old. It was awful, and ended up being a drain pour.

Yeah, I looked in the homebrew forum here and either old and oxidized coffee OR light to medium roast coffee tends to be the common culprit. Another culprit seemed to be how the coffee flavor was infused. Makes sense to me as a coffee nerd. I really love the dynamic flavors of lighter roast coffees so it's interesting to hear that it's much harder to get that into beers ... which makes me appreciate the great coffee IPAs and saisons I've had (granted, they're rare).

Guess I need to investigate further to understand the instances of Pipeworks beers that didn't have coffee but still had the green pepper aroma / flavor. Perhaps it's from cocoa nibs; seeing as coffee beans and cocoa nibs have a lot of similarity, I could see them imparting a similar off flavor.

    Cheers!

My understanding is that coffee beers are always best consumed fresh, since the brewer is essentially brewing coffee in the barrel. I wouldn't want to drink 2 month old cold brew, and I wouldn't be surprised if doing so wasn't a pleasing experience.

Also I know for a fact that Hangar 24 suggested popping Mocha ASAP. I didn't pick up on any green pepper when I sampled it some weeks ago... hmmm, would be interested to hear more opinions on it.

Second'd that Royale is flipping amazing. It often shocks me that it doesn't garner more recognition! For reference, I traded 2 Roayles for 3 JK sours (Fen Tao, Tempranillo, Atrial)
