Alt Beer made in Düsseldorf, Kölsch made in Köln, Schneider Weisse, Ayinger, Weihenstephaner, and most anything that comes from Bamberg. I would say "anything that comes from Bamberg" but I am honestly afraid to try Kaiserdom's one-liter Premium Pils can.

Stuttgarter Hofbrau and Hofbrau Munchen Oktoberfest. Good luck finding Stuttgarter here in the states.

They don't double-dry hop with Citra or barrel age anything, not interested...

For a domestic Kolsch I think that Lancaster's is really good stuff.

A lot of my faves have been mentioned, but I'll throw a shout-out to Mahr's Ungespundet and the Einbecker Bocks (trad bock and maibock). And Vitus deserves a mention, too- the quality/price ratio is off the charts on that one.

Yes to all of those. Except Päffgen but I am off to Köln in a couple of weeks to try it again, just to be sure.

In regards to altbier and kölsch, you really need to go over to Germany. You can try lots of different local altbiers in Düsseldorf and kölschs in Köln (Cologne). The two cities aren’t that far away and are connected by train so it is possible to visit both of them in one trip.

Beer imported from Germany loses some of its freshness on the trip across the Atlantic so it is best to try it there if you really want to make a fair comparison between American and German beers. There, many of the beers are also served directly from the barrel, which is similar to cask beer in the United States. Drinking in Düsseldorf and Köln is a breeze because most places only have one beer available and waiters keep walking around with trays of stange glasses, giving you a beer as soon as you need one and putting a tick mark on your coaster to keep track of how much you have.

In Düsseldorf, my favorite altbier was made by Im Füchschen. The ones from Schlüssel, Schumacher and Uerige were also quite good. You can get beers from the Uerige in the United States.

If you’re going to be in Manhattan soon, you can get Long Trail here. I think the altbiers from Uerige are much better; you can get beers from both breweries at the Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room or New Beer Distributors. Like Düsseldorf and Köln, the two stores are close to each other (within walking distance) so you can visit both of them in one trip.

I've actually had a German IPA dry hopped with Citra...although it was made by some Weihenstephaner students...
