You think (the SN comment)? The beer struck as a bit more complex and structured than previous SN versions, and my thought was that it could probably benefit from some short term aging. Still, I thought it was pretty damn tasty now, and will probably be even better 6 to 12 months from now. I thought the Cherry Imagine was the better of the two beers at the present time, but I could see myself feeling just the opposite 6 or so months down the road.

? The Cherry Imagine was awesome no doubt. I just was a little let down by the SN. Wasn't expecting a peat hit. I'm sure it will mellow out a bit (hopefully). Maybe the bottle is a bit different.

Peat in Super Nebula? I don't remember that from previous versions, and I hope there isn't much of that character in there. (Single Malt Adam has made me extremely wary of peat flavors in beer...)

Yeah, I was confused by that too. Why would there be any peat in SN?

I'm not sure either. I don't recall thinking the beer had a peaty or smokey quality when I tried it. Will look for it now, after reading phobicsquirrel's post.

Why are people bitching about the double entry's for people that have failed to get in on previous releases. Heaven knows you "usual suspects" would be stoked to get a double entry if you were like some of us that got shut out on the last couple lottery's. I think its a great policy to help the people who have been trying to get in but have been unlucky. Also it sure as hell isn't a guarantee, my bud has tried to go to both the last two releases and this one with both him and his girl entering and struck out every time. I think its a great idea no matter how much of a "usual suspect" I feel like, to spread the love.

I'm going to bump in here and point out that my use of the phrase "the usual suspects" was simply meant to encompass the beer geeks I tend to run into most often. No offense was intended.

    Right. Carry on.

If there are any last minute cancellations for the brunch, please send me a message. Would love to attend but have been shut out. Looking for only one entry.

Huh - I didn't even know Super Nebula had smoked malt in the bill. Guess I need to revisit past editions.

Peat would keep the lines short.

BTW. I know we're a back water craft beer town, and that no one here would know a good glass of beer if it hit them in the head (see the Hellshire release comments), but for God knows whatever reason, B15 sent down a keg of Super Nebula, Cherry Imagine and Bourbon Prophecies to 16 tons. Not sure when it will be tapped, but it hardly matters anyway, because I'm sure no one will drink it here in Eugene.

    Cheers!

looks like super nebula 2014 is flat.

The Art and Magic of Bottle Conditioning
All of our barrel-matured beers have been bottle conditioned. I choose this method for a couple reasons - one is the artistic approach to carbonation and the resulting smooth mouth feel. Additionally, the added yeast will consume remaining oxygen in the bottled beer, setting the stage for better stability.

The higher the alcohol content of the beer, the harder it becomes for the yeast to thrive and properly carbonate. It is always stressful to bottle these beers flat and wait for the yeast to do its job.

Historically we have had a good, but not perfect, success rate with hitting desired carbonation levels. For our non-wild barreled beers we shoot for a low amount of CO2 as, in my opinion, over carbonation detracts from the experience more than under carbonation. Because of this, and bottle conditioning not always developing as planned, Super Nebula is much lower carbonated than expected. There is a possibility that with time more carbonation will develop if stored at room temperature, though I would not count on this and if you do not enjoy very low carbonated beer, please do not purchase these bottles.

I always look from every angle at our bottling program and may make the decision to force carbonate in the future.

    Thank you
I look forward to seeing you at the pub!

this is the first time they used the smaller 500ml bottles for a stout, so maybe there's issues with the carb levels a'la De Garde with their first run of 22oz bottles in that they were carbed a bit too low?

Probably a bit of an over reaction on my part.

The Oakshire event rep was making a comment about how this isn't the Midwest, when someone asked if he/they were prepared for the crowd. Obviously, no one is expecting Dark Lord like crowds for the Hellshire event, but even so, I disliked the inference that folks out here aren't nearly as passionate about great beer as those who live out in the Midwest... because IMHO, that's simply not the case.

Anyway, that lead to a bit of a snarky, late night, over reaction comment on my part. Obviously, the folks at Block 15 are well aware that there are plenty of craft beer fans in Eugene, and that of course 16 tons will have no trouble selling all three beers, and probably rather quickly.

I'm wondering since the nebula this year is flat, and it didn't have the problem in the 750, if they will go back to nebula in the 750. I'm thinking that if next year it's flat again, thier may be problems. I also wish they had announced the flat thing earliar because I know several people who stayed the night for the release. I hope the 3l bottles aren't flat, anyone open theirs yet?

I think there is definitely more than just the problem of this years bottles not carbed…..the taste and smell are extremely off-putting. Will defer to those who told me the draft version was much better, but I couldn't even finish the bottle I just opened.

On the other hand, the bottle of Black Framboise I opened a few weeks ago was one of the most memorable beers I've had the past few years.

I'll agree the taste seems different than last year. I liked the flavor, just missed the carbonation. I got a sort of blueberry / fruity flavor up front which I liked - could easily be from the cocoa nibs - but I could also see that being an infection waiting to happen.
