    1) Some folks here care about beer as a whole.
    2) You're pretty much correct in that people don't care. This thread is 1 page and there's only been one post with affection. If this was a story about Bourbon County, folks would post much more.

That's what Heineken are exploiting. They figure American customers don't know that it's not brewed in Newcastle any more, and if they do, they don't care; they don't know "Newcastle IPA" doesn't exist in England, and if they do, they don't care; they don't know what "real ale" means in Britain, and if they do, they don't care that Newcastle isn't.

It's not my sort of beer either. But the fact that I don't like it and you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad beer, just beer for others to enjoy. We are a minority not an elite.

There are some parallels to the term "craft" over here. There are some controversies over who's in and who's out, relevance, and if it signifies quality. @WhatANicePub mentions getting chased down the street because that Newcastle box would go over as well as a Miller box with "the original craft beer" on it over here.

Possibly the equivalent is that Blue Moon has "North American Craft Beer" on the packaging in Europe.

I agree with that statement about clear bottles but oddly this is one of few beers that I prefer in bottles. Draft always seems flat or something.

I've never seen it on draught. It's a rare example of a British beer designed from the outset to be bottled.

Must be why I never liked it as much on draft Back in the day when it used to be a favorite of mine. A steak restaurant in the states always had a meager draft list but always had new castle. I ordered it every time I went.

New castle on draft is pretty common in the states.

they need to do something, the price point, added against the flavor you receive makes this a poor value, for your hard earned beer dollars.

When my friends and I were starting out in Beerland, California, we loved it AND called it "The Dog". My mom bought me a keg of it for my 21st birthday in the early nineties. I didn't know that we were in the "wrong circles" until now.

It still baffles me how much I used to love Newcastle. They DO make it in cans. It is really hard to find. Back in my early twenties I worked basically as a waiter at this country club and they carried it in cans. Before I really got into craft beer when I used to drink the stuff I actually preferred it in the can. Recently when I have tasted it (not in cans as it is hard to find), it just kinda tastes like sadness lol.

Oh and remember Newcastle Werewolf? My work got a keg of it for a Halloween promotion a few years ago. We had to sell it for like $2 a glass just to get rid of that atrocity of a beer.

Seems like a good decision. Any brewer that is going to choose natural ingredients over processed chemicals is moving in the right direction.

The vast majority of British dark beers in the 20th century were coloured with caramel or some other type of sugar. Totally normal brewing pratice.

I got no problem with Newcastle in cans. Kinda want one, now that I think about it.

Ah, okay. Wasn't aware of that.

But isn't "caramel coloring" different from just plain caramel, though? I know when I hear "caramel coloring" I think "some dye/chemical that's intended to replicate the color of caramel" rather than actual caramel.

Does it use the "light-stable" hops? I've never had New Castle but I'd be interested in comparing one from the clear bottle vs. a can.

Both the candy and the food additive are the product of heating sugar. The latter has simply been subjected to it longer and is more oxidized.

Looks to me like, given the amount of NBA you'd need to drink to be exposed to dangerous levels of 4-MEI, the increased carcinogenic risk would be background noise to the health damage from the alcohol.

I used to drink a lot of Newcastle but it's just fallen off of my beer radar the past couple of years with all the other great beer choices out there.
