Without trade forum comments a lot of these folks will have little to no posting history, most don't really cross over between the discussion forums and the trade forums, at least not aside from a few regional forum posts.

Yeah, I remember that, I actually felt sympathetic toward the accused bad trader after all was said and done. Anyways, without comments a lot of this douchebaggery (which is pretty evident from trade forum comments) wouldn't have been noticed beforehand.

Good point @WTKeene, I didn't read closely enough I suppose. I definitely agree @DeadWalkerAir, I've been turned off from other hobbies that I was legitimately interested in, for exactly that reason; a subject may interest you but if the people you'd spend time with engaged in that topic do not, then why bother?

I like the idea of banning "What's my beer worth?" / "What can I get for beer X?" threads, but allowing "What will it take me to get beer X?" and "Completed Trades for Beer X" threads. The former promote the unwanted/auction approach to trading, while the latter help people put up successful ISO:FT posts for beer they want to try.

OP here. All of this has been quite interesting, but I've been accused of calling newbies "assholes" and "douchebags," which I never did. My main point was that in the last six months, new traders don't seem to know the etiquette around trading, which has led me to not want to continue trading relationships with most of them. I'm still of the opinion that removing the 30-day wait period wasn't the best idea. Not that it completely solved the problem, but it did encourage them to get to know the site, see how trades are properly done, and contribute positively to the community before trading.

We can agree to disagree on the 30 days, but today I applied changes that now forces everyone to agree to/view the rules before they can even see the trading sections of the site. I think this, along with some other solutions that we're working on, will greatly help the overall beer trading community.

More thorough updates to follow ...

"what will it take to get beer X?" is just the inverse of "what can I get for beer X?". Someone wanting to ask the latter can easily frame the question as the former and get the same answer.

A lot of these problems are self inflicted. As older traders, we are the ones who have helped to hype beers and change the perception from commodities into individual products. We have helped push the fact that not all beers are created equal and their value isn't simply just the dollar amount. There's been a good amount of blaming new traders for this and it seems pretty ridiculous, considering we've helped to develop this culture of OMG walez. If anything, it needs to be more inclusive and less exclusive.

You reap what you sow and the direction that we're heading with things lately like KBBS, Kiwi and Ann are only going to make things worse. I think we need to get rid of these value threads. Figure out what you want for your beer and be happy.

Didn't read every post in here but I have had legitimate trade posts taken down for "trolling" or I believe another answer was "causing too much of a scene" or similar. Why can't we remove the comments from the trade posts and let the responses speak for themselves? If someone is going to determine what's fair, unfair, or "trolling" it should be the BA community. If legit trade posts are going to be removed, every trade post should be approved by a mod before posting.

95% of the time this is what happens via the report button.
We don't have time for this, we rely on the community to help out.
Since you brought it up, I think you should go look at your profile page and look at all the warnings you have, theres a little tab so you can see this now. Seems this happens a good amount of the time to you.

"Trolling" ... Trying to make trades that are legitimate. Removed for "trolling" those are your calls not mine.

And thats why we are here. When your "trolling" posts are reported we look at it, and if we agree we delete it or give you a warning.

I would imagine some kind of tally so see how to put how long to put you in time out for when you ... Troll.

@MykelJH @HugeBulge: Given both of your warning histories, feel free to keep it up. It'll just end up in a perma-ban. And HugeBulge: I just did you a favor by pulling you out of a ban, so don't fuck it up.

I would have never joined BA if it weren't for the trading. I would have never become active here if it weren't for the 30 day waiting period. The 30 day waiting period is to thank, outside of the community here, for my participation and enjoyment.

I so much more appreciate a private communication than a public pronouncement. First, you have no control of whether to open and read a public pronouncement, or whether to share it with others. Folks who have a problem with getting unsolicited PM's (really? this is a problem for some folks? gawd), as some have mentioned, have a foolproof way of avoiding them that requires zero effort. Don't open them. OTOH, disabling replies on ISO led to massive dissatisfaction when it was attempted, and I doubt it would fare better now.

I don't see why we can't rely on the mods as we do now, and request folks not to reply in our threads if that is our wish, and leave things as they are.

That's kind of where I've landed after reading this headache inducing thread.

Why punish the majority for the actions of the minority?

We just need some new rules (e.g. certain thread topics to ban), make them (and breaking them) clear, and more mods; the latter being an issue as few well-establish BAs/traders are willing to step up to the task, but they sure have a lot to say about it; and no offense to you or anyone else, it's just a fact.
