My experience with Brown Ales is limited. But, I really liked Bold City Duke's Cold Brown Nose. I know that it did not receive rave reviews on this site but I enjoyed it and it was very drinkable. I have also had Dogfish Raison D'Extra. From what I remember was I drank it too fast because it was very drinkable. Then I remember bed. I would definitely drink them both again and because of them I will try other brown's as I see them.

Thanks, after I posted it I saw it was labeled black ale on the bottle. Well it looks dark brown to me and is still very good!

Ithaca Nut Brown Ale, a solid english brown ale. I'll admit, it's a bit elevated in my mind because it's one of my first and my Dad's favorite.

I won't lie, I steer clear of ordering brown ales these days just because of the tendency to aggressively hop them. I enjoy a nice, malty brown ale, but when there's stuff like the Carson's Brown Cow out there, where every description waxes poetic about seven types of malt with a "moderate hop presence" and all I can smell or taste in it is perfume...I tend to skip on to other parts of the beer list.

That being said, Samuel Smith's Nut Brown is one of the beers that introduced me to craft in the first place, and I still think it's pretty good today.

Triple Digit Chickow! is darned tasty, but it's definitely on the dessert beer end of the brown ale spectrum, being all sweetness, hazelnut, and chocolate. Like Nutella in a glass, with alcohol. The maple and coconut variants are pretty darned tasty, too.

Being very hoppy works more for me with brown ales than other types of beer because they're inherently balanced by the maltiness.

I enjoyed SmuttyNose Durty when I had it last year. But Dogfishhead Indian Brown, SN Tumbler have to be in the top. But Sam Smith's tops all as far as holding a standard.

I enjoyed drinking the Yards Brewing cask version of the 1933 Whitbread Double Brown:

“Yards Double Brown: A clone of an ale brewed by Whitbread Brewery in 1933. It consists of English Maris Otter Malt, American 6-row and Chocolate malt. Following an English brewing tradition, caramel is added for flavor. Fuggles, East Kent Golding and Pilgrim hops lend an earthy flavor with a hint of lemon. 5.3%”

    Cheers!
