Jeez I logged on a few times was told I had insufficient privileges to reply to posts. Missed a lot of pages. But back for the fun. Still snowing and looks like my area will get some more Thursday into Friday. Happy shoveling for me.

I'm still working my way through the amazing box of Florida goodies he hooked me up with for taking 4th place in one of the football pick leagues. The generosity of everybody here is amazing.

All this love for Regular Coffee is great. As a lifelong NJ resident (outside of college) and a long time craft beer drinker, it is great that NJ finally has a beer people are searching for, now I just wish I could get more of it.

Ummm... yeah... about that  To be pedantic (which is really what I'm best at normally): It is. But it refers to English IPA, which most people in the US would hardly consider a Pale Ale, much less an IPA. Plus once the English pulled out of India in the 40s the call for IPA was greatly reduced. Its only been in somewhat recent times that alcohol consumption has become more mainstream in India and I think there are parts that it really still isn't (thankfully not the parts I'm in). There is one brewery I know of in Bangalore and thankfully its close to my hotel. It isn't good, but it'll get the job done

No kidding! Especially now that we have something called an 'Imperial Porter', what the heck is that and how is that not a stout. I get it if its just another name for a Baltic Porter, which does have some style differences, but just use the name Baltic Porter then  True-to-style porters I'm usually not a huge fan of because I think it just ends up tasting like a lighter stout, but there are so many non-true-to-style porters out there these days that might as well be stouts except maybe that have a bit more chocolate or brown malt than a stout typically would.

That also was very recent. Also, most of that was purchased based on hype, especially considering the 2013 ANTEAD was not very good at all. 2014 ANTEAD was great.

I'm pretty sure @Mikexw @LehighAce06 and @NJB145 can attest to my statement regarding the 2013 version.

I somewhat concur with the @Syracuse12 statement on the 2013 vs. 2014 ANTEAD. Side by side, the 2014 blows 2013 away, but I felt that on it's own 2013 was decent.

2013 wasn't worth waiting on line for (and back in 2013 there was no line).

It's interesting as to what 2015 is going to be like since there is another new brewer at Kane. Although it is likely this batch was made with the old brewer.

From what I have heard the 2013 had some of the batch that was just terrible and some bottles that were ok. I don't want to use incorrect terms like infected, or over or under carbonated, but people who know beer far more than I do, have said the 2013 ANTEAD had ok bottles and undrinkable bottles. The 2014 was brought to a maryland? craft beer fest and won some award? again just going from memory and thats what drove the hype of the 2014.

But yeah, as @Syracuse12 is trying to say it is great they NJ is starting to get some beers that people will trade for, but it sucks that those beers are so limited. I wish I bought more ANTEAD but I have also traded/BIF'd more ANTEAD than I actually drank myself. I was lucky that a beer manager kept me in the loop for regular coffee and even though he is limiting the selling of the beer, I had a friend that helped me get 2 4 packs, 50% of which I gave away/traded away to people in this thread. I won't even try to get any more from this store unless he is still sitting on it a couple weeks from now and just wants to move it. But I doubt that will be the case. It is a catch 22 of wanting to have said beer and share said beer.

I don't think Imperial Porter really is another name for Baltic Porter; Baltic Porter don't forget is a lager fermentation; I expect that Imperial Porters are essentially ramped up American/English Porters, with an ale fermentation. As for the difference between an Imperial Porter and a Stout, I have no idea; maybe higher ABV while maintaining a lighter body?

Pretty sure '14 ANTEAD won a GABF Gold medal in the barrel aged beer category too. It was one of the best beers I had at GABF, easily...

Agree in general, though there have been some cases of people using the name 'Imperial Porter' instead of 'Baltic Porter' because they didn't think people would understand Baltic Porter (which isn't a bad guess as most people probably don't really understand the lagering that is don't to a Baltic Porter, with an ale yeast). Can't think of what beer(s) it was, but pretty sure I've seen it used that way.

For example on weirdness though, Black Butte is an imperial porter. Black Butte Porter is a porter (obviously, based on the name). Not sure I can tell Black Butte XXVI (for example) from a stout though. I dunno, maybe I could. Based on the description on their webpage (which thankfully is very descriptive on the ingredients), there's no black malt so maybe I could get behind calling it a imperial porter instead of a stout, but there's Midnight Wheat... I feel like its more of an imperial porter because its the big version of their porter... which to me describes a stout in general

You might be on to something regarding mouthfeel, though we don't have a number to measure that like we do gravity, hoppiness (even though there are issues with that), ABV, color, etc so its tough to say. Though I guess mouthfeel generally relates to the FG, though not exactly and people rarely publish those (though its fairly easy to figure out given the ABV and the OG).

Agreed all around; I think at the end of the day it's really more about marketing than it is anything scientific. Similar to how many Triple IPAs really would be better described as American Barleywines, albeit very hoppy ones, but IPA has a lot more market appeal than Barleywine does.

True, especially considering my local drinking group has a long running complaint about how malty many Double and Triple IPAs end up being. I mean, I get 'balance' and all that, but once you've blown past Pale Ale, gone into IPA, and then blown past that into Double and Triple IPA land, I think you've blown the concept of 'balance' out the window already
