Pilsners. Why do they have such low ratings?

Because they are a less popular style than, say, RIS. Some people only love intense big flavors and show it in their ratings.

However, the lower numbers do not mean the beers are less good, just that the use of the rating scale is not consistent from one style to another. So to find the most liked Pils beer look at the order of the beers based on their ratings and focus on the most highly rated you can easily find in your area, but ignore the differences in ratings between beers from two different styles.

 

Because they usually don't have a hoppy profile that smack you silly, are not 7% ABV or above, and aren't barrel aged.

 

Very hoppy - no
High ABV - no
Sour - no
Barrel aged - no

Plus they're part of a family of styles on which macro beers are based

So unfortunately they're under-appreciated

But at least that means you can drink something you enjoy, drama free. It would be worse if you were having to line up at stores to get hold of some

I agree, OP. Lagers are hella underrated. Some of my very favorite beers, the ones I make a beeline for the store, are simple, tasty lagers. Got a beer thirst? Waddaya gonna drink, a 55% , brett-brewed, rum-bourbon-wine-tequila-whisky-chardonay-champange-oak aged quadrupple imperial stout with extra hops?

No way, gimmie an Avery's Joe Premium or a Paulaner Pils. I want a simple, crisp tasty beer after playing a ball game, not a rich beer.

 

I personally love Czech Pils and usually enjoy a German Pils as well. But, some may get turned off of the Pils style altogether after trying an underwhelming offering (usually of the German variety) that are popping up more often than not from a lot of smaller breweries. Darn shame too, but I have to agree with @rollom that without all the fanfare, some of us can pick them up with no problem whatsoever.

 

Says more about the reviewers than it does the beer style or brewers.

 

Also, I'd wager the majority of reviewers here haven't had the best available here on earth because it requires an actual trip to Europe.

 

love me a great pils, they are like a bakery in a glass.. love dem.

We tend to rate things higher that are big bold and somewhat obvious, pils is like the delicate touch of tastiness... all so soothing when done well.

 

i still remember the first time I had SA Noble Pils on tap. Cheers.

 

I find Pilsners nicely balanced and enjoy them from time to time. Don't worry about the ratings and enjoy what you enjoy.

 

From what I can get, maybe a fresh keg of Konig Pils.

Higher ratings are often associated with beers that have complex flavors, aromas, etc. In my opinion, pilsners tend to be more straightforward when it comes to these characteristics, but when done right can be just as world class as any other style of beer.

 

Can't wait for Stone's new Pils.
