A google image search of the term shows quite clearly how different these beers are. Again, however, it's a lot like Kellerbier (which no one can really define either -- nor should they really try).

I didn't get a solid response from our Lebensmittelrecht guy concerning "milkstoutgate".... which proves just how desperately we need clarity in this area.

But, to put things in perspective, I think I'll drink a perfectly balanced Spaten Helles that cost me about 60 cents. At this rate, it'll be a long time before I get a craving for a milk stout. Prost!

Apropos of nothing, I "like" Forschungsbrauerei on Facebook and today they posted their "Marktschänke am Viktualienmarkt" menu for this week, Feb. 9th - 13th. I had no idea they were at the Viktualienmarkt. If you have never had their beer it might be worth it to mosey on down to the Viktualienmarkt and see what's on.

I don't remember that at all either. Must be quite new, or maybe there's a Viktualienmarkt in Perlach?

Hmm, I didn't consider that. I have some research to do...

For you and @Bierman9 who I think is also a big Forschungsbrauerei fan?

    Sounds like good news!

ETA: for non-German speakers, they have been open since Aug. of 2014 on Frauenstraße 10 in the Viktualienmarkt, and also offer a rotating selection of small breweries on draft (!!).

Very cool that Forschungsbrauerei is now readily available in town. If your trip is a quick one, that's a lot more convenient than to have to make the Perlach trek. That St. Jacobus is one of the best beers in the area and their newer dunkel is also top notch, too.
While no substitute for the individual locations, you can get quite a few regional brands within a few blocks of the Viktualienmarkt now. Andechs, Ayinger, Tegernsee, Aktien (ABK), etc.

Don't forget the Pschorr Helles served by gravity from the wooden keg right there at Der Pschorr on the Viktualienmarkt. Stuff is crazy drinkable...

Here's a fun little video from Der Pschorr's website. Good shots of the Viktualienmarkt and of course the Helles!

Any way to link to that without it downloading the video?

I tried to embed the video, but this site wouldn't let me. Unfortunately, I'm somewhat computer illiterate, so apart from going to Der Pschorr's site to view it, I don't know any other way. Sorry.

That's nothing, I'll gladly pay that from time to time. On draft here it's 9-$10 for a pint.

Shlenkerla helles is $4'ish here, although the last couple of bottles I purchased were a little skunky. The fact that they tend to stagnate on a warm shelf never helps. I'll happily drop $4-5 if they're fresh, though.
They haven't made it in years, but Shiner Smokehaus used to be a surprising equivalent that was fresh and dirt cheap.

Chris, how do you determine if they are fresh?

    Cheers!

Sadly, I don't in most cases. I have a store near me that stores them in a dark cooler and usually takes good care of their imports. Whenever they have any I'll buy them. At most stores I simply won't bother.

I have had some from a place I generally trust. Recently nearly everything -- bottle and keg -- has been hazy and on the way down. I would like to know more about how the Helles is transported over here. I have seen videos of B United filling up cooled tanker trucks of what appears to be the Helles for export. I assume they keg off of that huge tank once the beer reaches the U.S. The bottles I assume jut come over in sealed cardboard cases.

This past weekend I went 'browsing' at a fairly local beer store that I typically don't frequent since that store is very pricey. One thing that I am impressed by this store is its very large selection including a large selection of imports. As I was browsing a young fellow came by and asked: "Can I help you". For conversation purposes I asked: "Which Schlenkerla beers do you have?" I was curious if Fastenbier was already being imported. His reply was "We don't carry Schlenkerla". I in turn stated: "Yes you do, I have bought them here before" (and I did for a pretty price :slight_frown:). He replied: "We stopped carrying because it didn't sell". I wanted to respond with: yeah, cause you price it so damn high, but I didn't.

    Cheers!
