I got a growler from Market Garden Brewery yesterday and this machine fills it to the very top!

I must be lucky then. My local pub that does their own beer always fills their growlers perfectly and seemingly without much waste. Love getting fresh beer from the local joint. And, it's an excuse to suck down beer since once the growler is opened the beer will only stay fresh/carbonated for about 48 hours max.. Oh well.

Loss of carbonation over time has absolutely nothing to do with fill method. If your fill method releases CO2 from solution, that carb is gone whether you open it in 5 minutes or 5 days. And on the flip side, if the seal on your growler is questionable, you'll lose carb over time no matter how it was filled.

Crowlers are really wonderful. A bar near me (Hulmeville Inn) has a crowler machine and I really prefer it over a Growler. I don't feel pressure to drink it immediately (compared to a Growler) and when I don't bring my growler and they have something on tap that I really want to take home, it obviously makes things really easy to take that brew home. Crowlers are awesome.

Could i go to a bar and just ask them to randomly fill my growler? Lets say i just pay $4$ on their berr price. Are they allowed to in MA? Or is there some special permit?

Just as an FYI as someone working on this stuff in WI, grocery stores cannot fill growlers. That article is two years old and said that a bill allowing such sales might come up in session. Not trying to be a dick, just letting you know.

Welcome to Beer Advocate LemonHead! Thanks for the clarification. I'm going to be near the IL/WI line this weekend and I appreciate the tip.
