If you're just getting into stouts then might I suggest Dry Dock Vanilla Porter.

Colorado stouts to seek out: (I'm a Colorado native and have really sought out as many Colorado beers and new breweries as possible.)

*All versions of Avarice from River north, especially the barrel versions.
*All versions of Yeti, especially espresso yeti.
*Avery super strong stouts- I like Tweak and Uncle Jacobs the best
*Go to Vine street, Southern Sun, or Mountain Sun during stout month and engorge yourself on stouts-I especially enjoy their hoppy stouts
*Left hand milk stout- Crowd Pleaser
*Eugene Milk stout from Odell-they also have some barrel Aged variants that have been tasty
*TEN FIDY- if you can find some of their taproom only variants you will be very pleased
*Oil man bourbon barrel stout from Elevation- One of my favorite stouts period, and very underrated and lesser known

Dif'rent strokes for dif'rent folks. I like that the hops is toned down (98 IBUs vs 60 IBUs) and more roasty/coffee flavors in H&S. Ten FIDY is world-class and a CO gem, but I just happen to like R&S better.

I second the Elevation Oilman. Top notch from an up and coming brewing concern in Poncha Springs.

You may want to give NB Portage a try. It's a bit lower in abv than some of the other suggestion. Just let it warm up a bit before you pour it and give it a vigorous pour. Like you, I've been enjoying stouts/porters with the advent of winter.

Yeah I gotcha, matter of personal preference, I was just joshing ya. I enjoyed hammer and sickle when it first came out, but never thought it was anywhere on the same level as some of the heavyweights in colorado. Maybe more approachable, but not nearly as complex, flavorful, or... amazing.

I love it when somebody asks about a style they've never had before and we go straight to the Avery 15%+ bombs.

Lugene Milk Stout is fantastic and I think Left Hand Wake Up Dead is under rated.

Breckenridge's 72 Imperial Chocolate Cream Stout is also really tasty. There's a barrel-aged version, as well. Avery's barrel-aged stouts are my absolute favorite. Just top notch. Can't go wrong with any of those.

    Ten-fidy and Avery's barrel stuff.

You have 2 of the best in the country to pick from!

Ten Fidy vs. Hammer & Sickle comes down to personal preference. Ten Fidy is a lot more roasty and less sweet while H&S is the exact opposite. I think Ten Fidy is probably a better beer overall, but if you like sweeter big stouts, H&S might be more appealing. Personally, I'd take the Czar over either of them.

-especially considering its price point <$6/22oz. They age well too... good tasting, a little hot when fresh (10.2%abv), so grab the most affordable case of RIS ever and forget about them for a while- you will be pleased to say the least.

It is stout month if you're in Denver or Boulder. Head over to one of the Vine St Pubs.

I agree; I prefer the Renegade stout over highly-hopped imperial stouts. It's insanely drinkable.

Bull/Bush Legend of the Liquid Brain, if you want an awesome BA stout. May as well start from the top :sunglasses:

Great Divide's Yeti...just plain ole Yeti. Distinct look when poured. I can spot that thing a mile away

If you want something a bit more "approachable" try LeftHand's Nitro Milk Stout

Definitely. How readily available is the Brain right now? I know it's still available at the B&B. Do other stores still have it?
