    Hello fellow BAs!

The wife and I will be visiting Portland from 5/30/2015 to 6/5/2015. The condition of the trip for me was that we hit as many breweries as possible. We have a lot of that mapped out but would love suggestions on places that are a must. I am most excited about De Garde, Cascade, and Hair of the Dog. I want to especially load up on bottles from these three. Do all of them sell bottles to go or are some only for on-site consumption?

Food suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well. Due to our itinerary, we will mostly be eating at or close to the breweries we visit. Despite the completely unhealthy side to all of that, we LOVE great beer with fatty, greasy pub style food.

You guys and gals would really be doing me a solid by offering any help that you can. Cheers!

I'm not a Portlander so can't help as much as others, but just so you know, de Garde is in Tillamook, about 1.5 hours west of PDX. But maybe you can get bottles in town, not sure about that.

Others can also comment on the availability of fatty, greasy pub style food in Portland. In any case, you can always go to Fat Head's.

Definitely appreciate the input. We do know that de Garde is a ways out from us. It's on the way to one of the places we are going. I'm hoping they sell bottles to go at the brewery.

We are definitely going to Fat Head's PDX. They have my favorite food ever here in Cleveland and they are my favorite brewery. I can't wait to see what the brewpub out that way looks like.

Oh and just so you know, @deGardebrewing is a regular on here and can probably tell you what to expect to find @ the brewery, if there's no information on the website (nothing currently listed under Beers). Especially if you swing through Seattle first and bring them some Fremont beers.

I'd also look for Ale Apothecary beers in Portland, even though the brewery is in Bend. Again, locals can give you better info.

I did see that thread a while back and will definitely be referring to it. Much appreciated! The most pressing question at this point goes back to whether de Garde, Cascade, or Hair of the Dog sell bottles to go or only for on-site consumption.

I believe that with Hair of the Dog, onsite is definitely the way to go. Your chances of getting a beer that's carbonated are apparently far better on draft than in bottles ... if you care about that sort of thing. There's a pretty lengthy thread here about that issue as well.

I have read issues about that. Is it really THAT common?!

You'll see that a number of people, myself included, have basically stopped buying HotD bottles altogether because of it. Mostly it's the barrel-aged beers, but Doggie Claws has also had problems. Still loves me some Adam though.

Man, that's certainly scary. I feel like I will still buy, but be really afraid in the process. I won't get the opportunity again.

The beers are generally still pretty tasty (w/ some exceptions), they just don't include bubbles.

While I've not been to Fat Heads, from what I've seen/read, you won't find similar food at breweries in PDX. Most places take a more considered approach to food out there than it seems from the Fat Heads menu. Not to say that you can't find fatty and/or greasy stuff out there, but you're going to have to try harder to find it than you would in the midwest.

All three of us sell bottles to go. I can't speak to how the list at the other two are posted, but we try to update our Facebook page any time there are changes. Hope that helps!

Based on your stated food preferences, I'd suggest you consider the following

    Near Cascade...
    Food
    Taqueria Portland
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-portland-portland-3

    Lardo
    http://lardosandwiches.com/

I believe Commons will be in their new location by then and will be VERY close to Cascade. Check them out for great beer.

Near Bailey's Taproom (You didn't mention going here but you should. great beers on draft and some nice bottles available to go)

    Food
    Brunch Box

I've been trading with MikeTD for years but never had the good fortune to meet him. You should bring him with you  and we could all share some beers

To elaborate a little on @deGardebrewing 's message:

At Cascade, you will almost certainly find many bottles available to go, as well as in the neighborhood of 20 selections on tap. I believe http://www.cascadebrewingbarrelhouse.com/?p=beer is generally accurate.

At HOTD, you might or might not find bottles available to go. Usually bottles of Adam, Fred, and Blue Dot are available, but sometimes they run low. You might also find those three in shops, although it's less and less common as they seem to sell most of their production on draft at the pub these days. Historically there has been a special release of bottles around Earth Day, but it's been less predictable lately, so I wouldn't necessarily count on anything else being available to go. They do have a very good library of vintage bottles available to consume on-site, though. Facebook or Twitter are the place to look for announcements of special releases.

And, de Garde almost always has something for sale to-go at the brewery, but it rotates frequently. As Trevor said, follow the Facebook.

I find it very hard to find a brewery here that doesn't have greasy, fatty, pub style food.
