Hey Guys...Bears fan from Minnesota here. My brother in law goes to downtown Chicago area to stock up on wine at Binny's. He's willing to grab some beer for me. I'm wondering what I should tell him to pickup that wouldn't be in MN. Obviousily Zombie Dust but sounds like it's sporadic and not sure of Binny's selection. Also Daisy cutter looks like a must buy. Is it possible to call Binny's and pay ahead to hold stuff? Thanks in advance.

We will generally hold stuff, however allocated/short supply/limited items are typically first come first served no holds/no orders.

You're going to have hard time finding any place that will hold Zombie Dust for you, given that it's hard to even find that stuff on shelves. Daisy Cutter will be easy to find, and you probably won't need to have it held for you/pay over the phone.

If you're looking for ZD, assuming that's not available, have your brother-in-law keep any eye out for beers like Pipeworks Citra (Ninja), Citra Hero, etc. I forget which ones are currently in rotation (Pipeworks Citra should be around, not sure about specific Binny's), but these are very citra-forward beers, and while not as "sessionable" as ZD would be, will all scratch your itch pretty well, I'd think.

Also, you're from MN, so I'm assuming you've grabbed some Abrasive? That's another must-have citra-forward beer, in my opinion (and one that just hit Binny's), so if you haven't had any, have your bro-in-law look for that as well.

Outside of citra beers, there's a lot of stuff that Pipeworks has recently dropped, including a cherry version of their barleywine, Murderous. There should be a whole lot of their bombers on Binny's shelves.

Other than that, Rev. brewing has a couple BA beers of note out currently; I particularly recommend Very Mad Cow, which is their BA milk stout. Great stuff. Everyone always says to grab Anti-Hero (which is good, but has never blown me away), so that's another you can check out.

What other types of beers do you like?

Vav, who all should I be following on twitter for Binnys? I follow BBrook and OakBrook but does anyone update on both beer and Whiskey/Bourbon? Skokie is the only one I know but its pretty far and they are out of anything they post by the time i could get there.

    Sean,

Thanks for the help. I love most styles with my favorites being Sours, Barrel aged, and balanced IPA's.

I love New Glarus sours like Cranbic, Enigma, sour brown ale, etc..Love to try Russian River but hard to come by.

Bourbon barrel aged beers like Central Waters stouts and barley wines blow me away although CW's BBW is one of the few Barley wines that I like. Goose Islands bourbon county is a little too viscous for me and I'd rather stick with CW's version.

I like IPA's but find many of them to be too much. My baseline for a balanced IPA is Bell's two hearted. Abrasive and the like are fun but definitely palate wreckers. I can't wait untill Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue hits Minnesota as I recently had it and was floored by the balance.

It looks like Illinois has good distro and I look forward to trying some of the things you mentioned.

    dave43,
Where in MN are you located? I am from Illinois but live in Duluth right now. Every time i am back in Illinois i pick up at least two cases of Zombie Dust. Actually have 4 cases bottled 2/16/15 right now. If your bro in law was in the Northern, IL area i would have no problem selling you a sixer, however, I am leaving tomorrow at 7 am for Duluth. I also recommend Pipeworks Citra, the binny's in Lake Zurich, IL is out, however depending on where your brother in law is, there was quite a bit at Antioch Liquors in Antioch, IL and the Deli Lama in Lake Villa, IL. I also recommend revolution anti-hero, which can be found fresh just about anywhere. Also available is Three Floyds Behemoth barley wine at Deli Lama and i saw Gumballhead there today as well. Not sure how far north your bro in law is, but just throwing it out there.

    Craft,

Thanks. I live in the western suburbs of Minneapolis. I spend alot of time in Duluth as I stategically get a hotel in canal park so I can walk over to Fitgers and be close enough to Lockport to get my New Glarus fix. Next time I come to Duluth maybe we could come up with a trade.

If you like sours and don't mind the cost, I'd check out some of Goose Island's sisters. I think Lolita is around (I've seen it at Binny's recently), and I know of places that still have Halia and Gillian sitting around. I'm not a sour expert, but the one RR sour I had (Supplication) reminded me of GI's stuff (I actually liked GI's stuff better, but again, my palate for sours isn't particularly sophisticated).

@dave43 everyone has you covered here. I will throw out a sour rec. tho. Destihl distributes all around chicago...maybe minnesota...not sure, but their wild sour series in cans is awesome imo. Here gose nothin and the flanders red are both solid options.

Nice...that spiteful IPA looks good, single hop IPA's are always interesting.

To be honest I've overlooked a lot of GI sours because for an everyday sour New Glarus can't be beat value wise. I will definitely give them a chance though.

Spiteful IPA is one of my favorites. Underrated as hell. Can't go wrong with that or Alley Time. And most of their 22oz offerings are solid as well.

To me the GI sours are less sweet and a little more complex. They are pricey compared to NG sours, but I think worth a try.

Penrose make really good Belgian inspired beers, check out fractal and devoir. Spiteful is great too - working for the weekend is one of my favorite local dipas

sounds good, i will be moving back to IL in May. If you end up in Duluth in the next month or so, feel free to let me know and we can work out a trade.

I totally agree; I'm Wisconsin every weekend or two, and I always pick up whatever NG's latest beer is. One of my favorite breweries, period. I totally get skipping GI's sours (they're pretty available, at least for a while, and they're a little more pricey than people like), but yeah, I'd give them a shot. They're certainly cheaper than Russian River's, for example.

Also, I haven't tried much of Penrose's stuff yet, but they've been releasing a bunch of sours as well, so that's another brewery to keep an eye out for at Binny's.
