I have had beers that shock me with how good they are, especially beers that are well known or hyped. Prairie did this to me recently with Pirate Bomb and Bible Belt, as did BCBCS. However, it is not often I come across a beer distributed from a state across the country that blows my mind.

Victory at sea just blew my mind. Problem is, I've never heard of it, nor seen it mentioned on here. Is this beer under the radar or do I possess a different palate? It is highly rated, but again, I am surprised I haven't heard of it.

It's an outstanding beer that may have lost some of its luster when availability was expanded. I never get tired of it.

I was wondering if it had seen increased distribution just recently. If this beer has lost some luster since, then I would love to taste one before that happened.

Sorry OP, had to choose the last option based on what options were available. VaS is incredibly good but I don't think it's under the radar at all. Under appreciated? Possibly. That this is available in sixers makes it a no brainer imo. I would choose VaS over Founders Breakfast Stout every day of the week and over many other porters & stouts. I can actually taste the coffee in VaS whereas in FBS it seems much more in the background (i.e., where the F is it?). I'm running for Prez in '16 and promise a sixer of VaS in every fridge. Vote early & often.

Actually this poll illustrates a BA trying to have fun and get opinions on a beer, while he is drinking that beer. I didn't think submit any "other" opinions in the comments was necessary, as that goes without saying.

Whoah, reading a little too much into the poll. Drink a Victory at Sea & vote again.

It has always been great but prior to this year you had to find it on draft or ponied up an bunch of cash for a bomber. Now there are 6 packs of this beast to be found in the wild for a reasonable price. Ballast point pulled the harpoon out of the wale and let it live free to be in its pod.

^ Hey, my bad on the bigotry. I deleted those posts. But just FYI my man, I've tasted Victory at Sea many times and it used to be my favorite beer. Not for a while, now...not even close.

It's a great beer and even better on tap! Definitely under appreciated in my opinion.

Under appreciated is what crossed my mind drinking it. It is well reviewed and that got me excited before I popped the top on it, but I have heard NO hype about this beer, which I think is hypeable. Is hypeable a word?

I would choose it over others as well. I would drink this over wake n Bake and Breakfast Stout. Personally, I like this as well as Big Bad Baptist and that surprised me for a bit over $3 a bottle. I was not lucky enough to find six packs, just singles on sale. Maybe I don't monitor BA enough, but I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of this beer, as both Breakfast Stout and Wake n Bake are very well known. I guess that shows how big the craft beer world is.

First time I had Victory at Sea, I was all, where have you been all my life. Then, the next time I had it, something had changed. Maybe it was the recipe, maybe it was me. The vanilla flavor seemed artificial, and I haven't been back since. Would love to find out how to recapture that first time again, but as with so many things, such an experience is elusive.

I have that happen a lot and I hope this beer will not fall in category. Bourbon County is still great. I can't manage to catch all the layers and complexity that I did drinking an 07 vintage in 09. Breakfast Stout is monstrous smack of coffee in the face, but only about 25% of the time.

Hype only exists when something is super limited. Once this went into regular production all the people who feel cool for getting hard to find beers moved on to something.

Victory at Sea, in my opinion is as good as any stout/porter I've had.

Had to take the phenomenal, under the radar choice. In my area Ballast Point as a whole seems to fly under the radar. I am all good with that as Victory at Sea is easily one of the top 5 "new to me" beers I have had in the last year.

Agreed! It's a phenomenal beer, and I think that the fact that it's not a whale (at least anymore) is a good thing in that, as some of the posts depict with some new people having finally tried it, and get to experience how phenomenal it is!

I've yet to see it in 6-packs, just 750ml bottles and very rarely on tap. Of course, being in PA, that means you get to buy a whole case for $100. And it's worth it.
