Is that the justification/selling point for the price or taproom hearsay?

Justification I'd assume, I was in and out of the brewery so didn't overhear anything from randoms

Still on sale at 7pm, didn't spring for more than 5 bottles and might get one to drink here. Kinda funny, the cashier told me that he had been warning folks how much a case cost. Lol

Just cracked one of my bottles, I don't do detailed reviews but just my quick thoughts

Appearance -- Very dark, half inch of white head, looks good in troegs chalice
Smell -- Probably the worst part of this beer. Doesn't have much of a scent, and that which is there is, in my opinion, not very good. First sniff was very boozy, but that fades quickly
Taste -- Phenomenal. Boozy enough that you can tell it was aged, but not overpowering. Fruity notes throughout. Excited to see how it changes as it warms.

This beer is fantastic. I was skeptical and hesitant to buy it at the price point, but it came out very well. A very well balanced beer with good flavors. A shame that we likely have to wait at least 3 more years for more

3 years in barrels? Hot damn! Is that posted anywhere? Any idea what barrels were used?

No, this is just what I heard. Don't want to out my source, but I'd say they are fairly reliable (you can choose to believe me or not -- I can't even personally confirm this is 100% true). I don't know what kind of barrels were used.

Haha, I didn't think you were, I was just clarifying -- I guess my "you can choose to believe me or not" line could have sounded a little harsher than I intended, my mistake

I saw the announcement on Troegs' website, thanked god it came on a day I could go to the brewery, and giddily drove to Hershey. It never occurred to me to check the price, this is Troegs after all. I was mentally prepared for a worst case scenario of low 30s a four pack. But 48? At The source?

On the one hand I get it. It will sell at this price, why not maximize profits? And there is a secondary trading/ebay market that buyers "profit" from. That must frustrate brewery owners so I certainly don't begrudge Troegs a healthy bottom line. Also I imagine that having limited quantities of sought after beer must be a huge pain in the ass. There is just no "good" way to get them out there.

    BUT...

I just never expected to be priced out of a Troegs product. I bought a $10 sixer of killer helles and a 4 pack of world class doppelbock pounders for $8.50 today. That is what Troegs is to me. Above average to great beers; at or below the price of other, usually lesser, breweries.

I have made my peace with being priced out of certain segments of my favorite hobby. Lambics/sours are a rare treat and I completely ignore BA Northcoast products and the Bruery to name a few. No big deal. @oneraindog I'm just wondering what some of the factors are that went into the pricing of this one. How long did this spend in the barrel? How do corked caged 375ml bottling prices compare to standard 12oz bottling prices? Can you offer any insight?

I have been looking forward to BA Mouflan for over a year and I did buy a bottle today. But I left Troegs with a bad taste in my mouth for the first time today and an altered perspective of who they are.

Sorry for the rant. Troegs will always play heavily in my rotation, but I'm done with the barrel aged stuff. My $90 case of Backwoods Bastard is tasting pretty damn good.

This may be one of the best bourbon barrel aged beers I've had. The nose is the the weak point, kind of nothing there, but the flavors as it warms....dark chocolate, vanilla, raisins and not much burn or heat for the abv. If the wife would let me, I'd go back and get a whole case!

I definitely think I like it more than BCBBW... though I've only had the 2013 when it was a year old, and it was a back on black friday, so it's hard to make that judgement for sure without a side by side comparison

FWIW, when I called around 6 I was told they had sold about 70 of the 200 cases.

Just popped my first bottle, was surprised how much I loved it. As others have said its a little soft on the nose but it's taste is perfectly balanced. I got very little booze for such a high abv and the bourbon favors worked so well WITH the fig, vanilla, chocolate, toffee, etc instead of simply overpowering them as happens in so many other BBA beers. Home run.

Bartender told me 18 months in the barrels. Barleywines are not my favorite style, but I thought it was pretty tasty. Losts of bourbon up front but as it warms, the chocolate, raisin and vanilla flavors become more apparent. Wish the coolers at Troegs weren't so damn cold. Still cases left at closing time but no idea how much is left.
