i love how this thread shifted from railing at someone for thinking cutting a line was okay to ripping apart someone over a poorly used analogy.

    is this really our "community"?

Haha - yeah that got out of hand admittedly. But when the crappy analogy is being used to say that the cutting in line wasn't poor form, then it deserves some sort of response.

WTF did I just read? Just don't cut, it's that simple. It's Having Manners 101.

It's ok for you to cut 'to be with your buddy,' but it's ok to delay me from 'being with my buddies' who are probably sitting at a table somewhere? Be an adult and stand in line like a big-boy...you'll be ok all by yourself for 3 minutes.

    Dear Lord.

edit: just reading this thread pissed me off.

I hope not. I was just giving an example of places where that would not float.

No way I'm reading all 3 pages of this, because I can't even believe there could be that much to say about this topic. The question posed was, "is it okay for me to cut in line," to which the only reasonable response is, "obviously not, you stupid jackwagon."

If we're talking about one of those aimless masses of humanity you sometimes see at beer events with no clear beginning, middle, and end, then maybe I can see another side to it. But if we're talking about an actual line, which it sounds like we are, then c'mon, no one is dumb enough to actually believe this is cool, right?

Oh, and the networking for a job comparison has to be one of the worst, least on-point analogies I've ever heard.

If I go into a bar with the same attitude and mindset as approaching the BMV, god help everyone else, especially those that cut the line.

Oh, so THAT's what their for!!! I always wondered why people care about their beer karma scores on here. I thought maybe there was a prize at some point or crown for the top score or you could somehow WIN at BeerAdvocate or something. This makes much more sense. Thanks!

Respect. You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

I see it now, and I'm never one to make a scene, but if I got to the place at say 5 in the morning for an event that started at noon, lets say, and at 11:45 4 people just sidled up and tried to get in line I'd probably give them the look, and the sigh...anymore than that and I'm risking a punch in the face. Besides, I'm pretty sure the people behind me would not be as nice.

Maybe I shouldn't be so stunned at people rationalizing bad behavior but I am. At the risk of sounding "absolutist", line cutting is wrong. No, "kids in wheelchairs" is not the same as you and your shitty friends disregarding the 20 or 30 or 300 people in back of you.

The fact that people are oblivious that this is wrong or (even worse) freely acknowledge it and don't care just screams that they suck in many areas of their lives. It is the same person who while driving sees a "lane ending, merge left" sign and speeds to the very last point they can merge and puts on their turn signal to get over, expecting someone to let them in. Their time is important. Your time is not.

I have read some really interesting exchanges on BA but I never thought I would see one where people were taught basic etiquette.

The mastermind troll. Gets everyone to do the dirty work for him. These end up being the longest threads, too.

Haha. Yeah, that is not the type of situation that I was thinking about whatsoever when I said that some cuts are fine. I wouldn't begrudge you for being pissed in that situation. Not at all. I'd probably join you in voicing distaste for people trying to poach better spots in line. But if the guy in front of you had been there since 4:30 and his wife or best friend (not a group, just one person to accompany) showed up later to join him as they had planned beforehand? I wouldn't be a Larry David in that situation.

Anyway, we could talk hypothetical situations all day and all I was trying to say is that I thought the prevailing attitude was an overreation. I've probably rustled enough jimmies for one day. Thanks for being civil about our disagreement!

In our defense (as a community)we did try our best to move it to an argument over reasonable accommodations though.

You bet - glad someone got the Sienfeld reference in there . I'd probably be cool with it if the situation was what you said above, especially if they gave me a heads-up before time.

For the sake of discussion, let's say the is 20 people long. What the cutter is doing is looking 20 people in the eye and screaming "fuck you assholes! i'm getting my shit first, and y'all can kiss my ass!". When you cut your line at the movies do you yell that type of statement to the line? I suspect not, because you don't want to get your ass kicked. Fortunately for you, most people were raised better, and let you slide. Some of us however, will happily, even eagerly, set aside what our Mama's taught us, and beat you at your game. If you don't go to the back of the line after I say something, I just cut the line directly in front of you. Your move.

Once, I accidentally cut the line at a wake. It was super-awkward for everyone. Ever since then, I've always queued up at the end and waited to chat with friends.
