Happened upon a four-pack of Swish (thanks @Justin42 for the Bier Cellar rec), and had one last night to conclude a solid night of work. It was fantastic, juicy and fresh, 8% double IPA.

This being the direction in which IPA's are going isn't a terrible thing, of course. It's great. Obviously, we know who's brewing them and what beers we like or prefer. My question is this: Are these the types of beer you'd drink a whole bunch of in one night? Why or why not?

I had one Swish, it was delicious, but it terms of sustained drinking (and not just the 8%, I think), I'd prefer something non-hoppy, a Mayflower Oatmeal Stout, for instance.

Will you just sit and pound growler (or can) after growler (or can) of hoppy stuff all night? No judgment, if so, just curious. Seems fatiguing.

I tend to share with my wife and go back and forth if in regards to exclusively drinking one specific beer in an evening. Usually will try a few exclusive if its a new beer for us. Otherwise we tend to split a few 16 oz or 750mls over the course of the night and mix it up. Mainly on weekends though.

I've always said one Heady is great, 2 Heady's is nice, 3 is abuse. Almost anything at that level is tough to swallow down 3 or more. It can be done, and I have. But if anything you will pay for it in the AM. That is a lot of alcohol to consume. I had a Boston of Diggler DIPA last Friday night while watching a movie with my wife and after finishing that off I was feeling it walking to the kitchen for some water. They are in no way brews I could drink all night. Never mind if I was ever at a party or get together with people I didn't know that well. Even if you don't feel hammered you might not be talking perfect either haha. Out at a bar where there are a plethora of them pouring it might not seem that odd to you, and at the time while your on the beer mecca high you might not notice. But as I said before when you get up and leave and quiet down and the next morning you will def know. I know JK has been quoted that he made Heady at the 8% level so you could enjoy more then one and not be too fatigued but 2 is my limit. The ABV just hits me too hard and my flavors are all out of whack after also.

Yeah, I feel like I simply can't appreciate the nuances of the beer after more than two. Let's be honest, we've all had more than two of these big beers. It's not a problem I have with a sweet stout or porter (so I guess maybe it is the ABV after all).

But after that Swish, you kind of do this thing where you think, "Man, that was really good, but there's another level Shaun Hill is at with brewing." This isn't to take away from BB; This isn't to start a "how good is HF" thread either. Just a statement. It's like Damien Lillard is an All-Star; Steph Curry is an absolute superstar.

Glad you were able to find some Bissell Brothers cans. I think you've hit the nail right on the head; for me, a pint is just about the perfect serving size for a beer like this. With IPAs and DIPAs moving consistently into the ~8% range, format becomes a big issue for me, and I expect for many others. If I have one "complaint" about Trillium's (and other places that do bombers/750s exclusively) awesome hoppy beers, it's that I wish at least some of them were offered in smaller formats. I almost always share a bottle of Trillium with my fiancee, which works out perfectly. But when she is drinking something else, it pretty much takes Trillium out of the equation for me, as I'm not going to drink a 750 ml DIPA by myself (especially during the week). I'd pay ~$20 for a four pack of pint cans of those same beers (i.e. same price per ounce) for the convenience alone.

Swish, I try to limit myself to one, because, personally, it leads to a longer than typical bathroom visit the next morning. Slightly disagrees with my system, but man do I love that beer! Pretty much disagree with most here, I will drink IPA and DIPA all night long. Now, all night typically means maybe 4 16oz beers (at the very most, often less), but I taste the all (or at least I think I do, I know I enjoy them all!). A 750ml is no issue, that is for sure. But then again, I drink pretty much exclusively the hoppy stuff. According to many I am a shallow drinker, but, hey, I drink what I like.

I love hoppy beer, and dont drink many other styles. I appreciate a good stout or porter, but i just prefer IPAs so yes i will drink multiple IPAs or DIPAs. I do agree after a certain point it is a little much. After my palate is destroyed i usually switch to sours. There have been a few times that i might have had one to many, reached for a great ipa like sip, heady or whatever is in my fridge then changed my mind and opened a shelf beer because i felt like it was a waste to drink a world class IPA. If i know i will be drinking at least a few beers i tend to start with a pale ale or something lower ABV versus a big DIPA.

That's what always baffled me about buying cases and cases of these big IIPA's and DIPA's. I don't know about you my taste buds are shot after one or two of these types of beers. So typically, I have one when I drink and then have to change to something else like a stout or a porter. Meaning a 4-pack is going to last me a week, maybe? (no I don't drink every night). If I bought a case I'd be pushing right up to the 3-month window on them and that's if it's the ONLY DIPA I drink - which, let's be honest, who does that? To me with a beer like Heady Topper, having more than 1 or 2 in a single sitting becomes really just a waste of good beer.

I'd assume most of this beer is used for trading/resale/instagram selfies and not personal consumption.

I could fairly easily (if they weren't so expensive) finish almost a case of Heady, Substance, etc within a week and a half. Say I shared 4 out of a case, I could definitely finish 20 within 10-12 days.

Don't get me wrong, I love stouts and sours and quads but damn Heady is delicious!

If I buy a case of something (like Heady), half goes to my buddies and half goes to me. And having a hop-head wife, I only get to drink half of what comes to me. So a case can go pretty quick.

Fair enough. So those four Swish I got on Sunday would for sure be gone by today? I have three left!

    Cheers!

Haha yeah probably! I don't get it very often so I tend to cruise through stuff like that.

Its definitely a personal preference so I understand but I'm so anxious to drink them when I get them I may not be the best person to ask.

Tree House's hoppy beers are the only ones I can really do this with. There is just something so smooth and juice-like about them that I can easily keep going and I have to be careful otherwise I'll hate myself in the morning. Most other hoppy beers that I drink wear me out by the time I've finished the second one.

We'll I picked up a case of Substance and a case of Swish last Saturday and have been cruising through it with little trouble. Usually about 4 a night, a couple of each. Think I only had 3 last night but in the end will have no problem drinking them while fresh. I just have no problem drinking hoppy beers.

I see this kind of thinking in many threads and these kinds of assumptions only seem to cause bad feelings. Being in NH when I make a trip up I am typically buying for myself and other friends in the area. If I walk out with a case it will all go to happy homes, not be hoarded or anything like that. Same goes when I hit Vermont.

That make one person. When I was up at Bissel someone had sent their mother and GF to get beer and told them to go through the line twice. Both were complaining that he already had a couple cases of substance sitting warm under the staircase at the house from a couple weeks back. There's your counterpart. You're a solid dude, but there are more people not like you. The sad part is the people not like you, say they do same things you say you do.

Totally agree. Look, yes, there are people who buy a case of something like Substance or Heady Topper, thinking, "Great, my brother will get a four pack, and so and so is coming to visit next weekend, we can have some beers together, etc." but the amount of people who buy cases and say they split it with friends is crazy talk. If they're telling the truth, there are a lot of beer bitches on his site, traveling every Thursday thriugh Saturday to pick up beer "for friends." I wish someone would do that for me.
