Greetings Irish BAs. I am travelling in Ireland and am having trouble finding out about any beer that isnt brewed by Guinness. I'm in Ennis tonight, but tomorrow I'll be in Killarney, at the Malton Hotel, then Mallow at the Longueville House Hotel, and then in Dublin at the Westbury Hotel. Id be very glad to hear any recommendations on places to find Irish craft beer and what things specifically to try. I don't mind drinking guinness, but id like to try more local things. Thanks for your help

Dublin has gotten some coverage before:

PhillGill kills it with his response.

From the Westbury you're 5 minutes walk from Porterhouse Central and The Exchequer for food and craft, plus Grogan's and Kehoe's for good Guinness.
10 minutes walk gets you to Bull & Castle or Against the Grain (opposite directions) for the full range of Irish craft and the Palace for a traditional pub and good Guinness but also craft options.

For breweries, O'Hara's is easy enough to find in bottles even in non crafty pubs and restaurants. 8 Degrees and Dungarvan are solid and Metalman is tap-only and worth trying.

BM me if you need more.

    Good luck!

    I'll second Zimbo's recommendation.

I get Porterhouse (of Dublin) beers on tap at Fraunces Tavern in NYC and they're excellent.

Is Mr. Dobbin still residing and more importantly brewing in the emerald isle?

Having just return from Dublin in which beer is very expensive to buy a Pint of Porterhouse Red is about 5 euro's a pint.
Craft beer to find in Dublin is also rare to find, however the Celtic Whisky Shop (by St Stephens Green) does have about 25 Irish Craft beers.

Not exactly. I may live in Scotland but I come from farther shores.
IMHO sales of most Irish whiskey comes largely from marketing and misplaced sentimentality. In comparison many Scotch and American whiskey (including bourbon and rye) are in an other league altogether. There are exceptions. For example, Green Spot is easily one of the world's very best whiskeys. Absolutely love it. But why is it, and Redbreast, the only 100% pure pot still Irish whiskys on the market? Its ridiculous. And a disgrace.

Anyone had Vat 69? Always fancied it after seeing that bloke chugging on band of brothers.

Yikes. Sorry -- my original post would have contained one of these "" but that I hate emoticons.

I know absolutely nothing about whiskey.

Its good, flavourable, reasonably complex and not at all blow you off intense you might expect. A pretty good intro into the whisky world. And its got that racy name too.

Blimey! Has somebody spiked my Caffreys? On the subject of the stronger stuff I like a good robust taste and find the Irish stuff a bit ahem subtle.
