Sour isn't a style (there are styles that are sour) but yes I am a professed lambic lover and I have the credit card statements to prove it

People keep saying this - sour is not a style. Yeah, it actually is. Of course there are variations and subsets of that. Yes we all get it - a berliner weisse is not a gueuze is not a lambic is not a flanders red, etc.

But sour is most definitely a style of beer.

Wicked Weed sours are awesome. They have a really nice program at the Funkatorium. Especially Black Angel and Oblivion

They are saying it because it is true. Sour is not a style. It is a descriptor like hoppy.

Lambic and berliner wiesse (and the other styles you mentioned) are not variations/subsets of the same style. That's ridiculous.

I like a lot of sour beers, not all and probably not even most but I do like Flemish or Flanders Red and Bruin styles in particular. My friend who is super excited about all sours was telling me last night about his "green" initiative to find out how many ways he can use vinegar to replace commercial cleaning products. As he went on and on about using vinegar in his dishwasher, as pesticide, as crabgrass killer, shampoo, etc, I became amused at the co-incidence of his liking sour beer so much,...

Which is why Gose is going to become more popular with breweries in the future. I just hope it maintains the same integrity that Westbrook or Anderson Valley when other more mass produced breweries pick it up in their line. Now Gose does not have the complexity that some of the Wild Ales do but neither does a regular porter compared to a BA stout! Similar but not the same.

According to the BJCP Sour is a category/style with Berliner Weisse, Flanders Red, Flanders Brown, Straight Lambic, Gueuze, and Fruit Lambic are all sub-categories. Poor Gose and Wild Ales don't have a sub-category.

    BJCP Guidelines 2008

Why would I be interested in what the BJCP (homebrew guidelines) has to say about anything, especially commercial beers?

They also think there is a difference between porter and stout

    "Does anyone really love IPAs.

Like is it your favorite style? Do you crave them daily? Can you drink multiple in a row just loving each one?

I'm fairly new to them and they are a tasty occasional treat for me, but I doubt they ever before more than that."

Yes they are some of my favorite styles though I see them as a treat to savor once in a while

What's ridiculous is pretending that a flanders red, a kriek lambic and an Oud Bruin are not part of the same family of beers. Their flavor profiles are nearly indistinguishable to someone who is not extremely experienced in drinking sour beer.

Haven't had many, but the ones I have had I've enjoyed. Funky Gold Mosaic was great, and the RR line was also very solid.

I've tried about 10 different wild ales including some of the Russian Rivers and some from Avery, but did not really like them that much. I guess my palate is not sophisticated enough to appreciate them! Must have destoryed all my taste buds and future taste buds drinking all that Wild Turkey and 151 in college. I did however really enjoy Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett (Leopold Whiskey Barrel Aged).

I thoroughly enjoy a well-balanced sour. The problem is that the difference in tartness levels can vary drastically with some being very undrinkable for me.

I have to be in the right frame of mind. I'm more into them with every passing year, but I need my IPA's,stouts and variety in general.

    ...It didn't say anything. Crap.
