Even better! I can never judge snifter glass sizes... a fair and reasonable price either way!

    "It may sound silly"

Considering the price tag for the beer, I don't think that's silly at all. Also, assuming your estimate is/was correct, an extra 2 ounces would mean that those customers were getting half again as much as those who were getting 4 ounce pours. I wasn't there so I can't comment on the practice, but if what you say is true, that's VERY poor form on the part of Capone's.

This is my thinking exactly........exactly. I'm not saying what Matt did is wrong, I love Matt. I'm just saying for me, it would not have been worth it.

Totally reasonable, in fact almost dirt cheap! I just wanted to clarify since I was talking to Jeff about it that very night and we discussed the price and serving size. It was perfect.

I thought it was well done honestly, they accommodated everyone they could with only a sixtel, and it wasn't outrageously expensive. Its a limited release special beer, and therefore it is going to be more expensive most places... such is supply and demand. Sure the samplers were small for $7, but it was each person's choice to go- nobody forced you!

Limited release stuff always causes this same controversy, and all I can say is we, the consumers, are ultimately to blame. That is the price we pay for getting heavily involved in an expensive hobby with limited availability of resources. There is much less drama when people just accept that, and spend only within their limit.

I understand your point, but my point is it is "outrageously expensive" although no one forces you he is still giving 4 oz pours for more than double what other places charge..this seems to be common practice for capones.. weather its $6 for 5oz of abyss or $7 for 5oz of KBS or $45 dollars for a bottle of Lamvinus, or pulling off kegs and putting them back on for their "special events" when they kick in an 1/2 hour to get you in the door..

Agreed. Yes, no one forces anyone to do anything (especially for those of us who didn't go). it's still fine to comment on the pricing, especially as it relates to what other places charged for the same beer.

I think the main point of contention is that people those they were waiting in line, presumably for the 8-10 oz pours Capone's usually puts out. When they get in the door, after waiting a couple hours, they found out it was half as much beer than expected but still the same price. At that point I think most people just throw their hands up in the air and say, "well I waited 2 hours for this, so goddamnit I'll buy it."

If a 4oz pout were half the price, then no big deal; or if people knew that it was 4 oz for $7, then fine. However, I think a lot of people kinda got in only to find out, after the fact, it's half as much beer as expected based on past experiences at Capones and half as much as every other place was pouring, but for the same price!

Business owners can charge what they want for the products they sell. No one is forcing you to pay that price, but if you wait 2 hours in line you've made an investment of time already. It's like staying in a hand of poker you might lose because you are pot committed, likewise with the 2 hours you've invested, you might as well go through with buying the beer even if you feel like it's a rip-off (I'm not saying that it is).

Just back from the monks event. Arrived at 1145 and had no issue getting younger. It was really really good. The elder I thought was not so good. No smell and nothing great taste wise. The supplication was amazing. My wife had a blind pig as well and I thought it was better than elder . Met some cool folks , donated to charity and had a great time. No issue spending $15 for the glass going to charity. My condolences go out to the guy who showed up with his girlfriend / wife and he really wanted a younger but she stormed out saying it was like a frat party. He seemedreally bummed. Score more points for my wife.
    Thanx momma.

    Enjoy
    I really did

According to an email I just received, it's still going.

We just hit $7,200 from our event today (in 2 1/2 hours). $2,800 to go. We still have a fair amount of Russian River Pliney the Younger left in our half keg. And we still have tickets to Raffle #4 available.
WOW! Vinnie & Natalie, from Russain River Brewing Company, just called and said they are donating $5,000 to Alex's Lemonade Stand. I love those guys.
Looks like we might hit $15,000 for this wonderful, local charity. We need your help in reaching that goal. Please swing by to enjoy great beer for a great cause. Remember that we are also donating 10% of all Russian River sales in addition to the beers and raffles where 100% of those proceeds for to Alex's.
Thank you for all your help, but we're not finished yet.

Was at the Monk's event as well. They even offered 'seconds' for the same 15 dollar cash donation still. Great Great event. MUCH better then Capone's. I've had several bad experiences with Capones for special events (PTY; Abyss @ PBW 2011; etc) that I most likely will not be attending another event there (Unless it's some super rare beer event that I can not EVER get any where else). I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I would not have spent 2 hours in line for a 4oz pour if I had known it was going to be a 4 oz pour. I understand the mentality of "let's give everyone waiting a shot at tasting" and I do not begrudge Matt or Capones for wanting as many people to taste it as possible but as others have said the price should reflect that. Yes; I spent 15 bucks for a 6 oz pour at Monk's. But, I knew everything about the event before I attended the event and decided to stroll up at 11:30 and see if they still had some. They did... I had a beer. Everyone love's Matt and what he does for craft beer in the Philly area it just seems like at these events Matt only see's dollar signs. I'll still be at Capones randomly from time to time for Lunch with my wife (too many special life memories for her and I to give it up completely).

My husband is there now- he said the Pliny is still flowing and lots of people are getting as much as they want.

To be fair, Capone's events for "somewhat limited" to "rare beers" tend to be 5.5 oz pours in that $7 price range. Was like that for Ephraim and almost every barrel-aged beer I've gotten there (at least over the last year) including BA Plead the fifth, Cashew Mountain Brown, Kaiser Curmudgeon, Rumpkin, KBS, etc.

4 oz, however, is something new.

Oh right, I forgot that Capone's limited beers now have those small pours. It seemed like the 5.5 oz pours were a new thing just last year, I wonder if 4 oz will be the new standard.

I've never seen a "limited beer" in anything but those little glasses..5.5ozs
I remember saying to the waitress when she gave me an abyss and said $6.50..your joking right.. I'm guessing thats 125-150% mark up on that keg

What are the chances Younger lasts 2 more hours? Leaving north jersey now but hedging my bet because City Tap has it on at 7 just incase I can't make it to Monk's in time.

Monk's had a half keg and looks like there is some still lef.t does andbody know what other bars got a half and keg because it would seemmuch easier to get some then a bar with a sixtel.

Monk's said they have "a fair amount" left. It's too bad they don't seem to be placing a limit on ordering PtY...I have work until 4pm and I work in the city but I have a feeling by the time I get down there it'll be gone. Definitely not sticking around for CTH tonight but it's a good alternative for those dead set on getting PtY.
