I didn't read all of the previous posts, but the only person whom I would give an answer to this question is my wife (who, obviously, needs to be OK with our entertainment budget).

For the rest of the 7 billion inhabitants of this planet, I wouldn't even respond to it.

I take back what I said earlier. I don't spend that much on beer, but anyone that would ask that question obviously spends too little.

The same reason you pay $10 for a burger at a steakhouse as apposed to $1 at a fast food joint, because you're willing to pay more for higher quality and better flavor.

I try to avoid that crowd. No retort nor discussion required. I support the craft brew industry regardless of the price. For those of you who are old enough, that's how we got the cheap pseudo brews in the first place.

I get this question all the time, but not in a judgmental way (Most of the time). People are genuinely curious to understand and also to see if they may be missing out on something. I usually say it is my interest and is similar to wine tasting. There is complexity to the beers. AND if it is someone I know, then I will ask them if they want to grab a drink sometime.

Make the comparison to fine dining and fast food. Yeah, you can get an enormous meal at KFC for $15....but it's pretty much deep fried crap. I'd rather spend more money, enjoy my meal and not hate myself afterward.

I appreciate quality beer and am willing to pay money to get it.

Most people who would question how much you spend on beer probably have a hobby of their own they spend insane amounts of money on.

Like, 'Why do you buy a hundred Steam games a month when you barely have time to play a quarter of them?'
'Why do you spend so much to collect vinyl when I can download it for a dollar a song?'
'Why did you spend $90 on an official sports jersey when I can get a cheap shirt with the team logo for $10?'
'Why did you buy season tickets when you can watch the game on TV for free?'
'Why do you go to fancy restaurants when you can get a burger at McDonalds for a few bucks?'
'Why do you own six guitars?'
'Why do you have a Lexus as opposed to a cheap used Hyundai?'

She only huffs and puffs until there is a beer in her hand and all of a sudden all of the money questions melt away haha. Plus she is buying alot too now so really no one really questions it anymore.

I have a medical condition. When I drink cheap beer I piss non stop and get migraines.

Obviously you can see who is married and who isn't by reading this thread. First off my receipts never get brought home so my wife has no idea what I spend. When I buy Pipeworks bombers she probably figures they just cost a few dollars each and who am I to educate her? I only find out by accident sometimes that she wears $300 shoes so I guess we are even.

I agree, my beer fridge in garage is minuscule to her walk in closet!

I've had it go both ways....sometimes they'll get the better beer and say "it was good, but I wouldn't spend that much on beer again"

As much as I love beer I actually am in a perpetual state of that quote. There is good and bad news.

The good news is I am usually breaking the again part of that quote very soon.

The bad news is there always is a new price point I can say that about.

My beer spending habits are cyclical... I probably spend as much in a 4 month period (early Nov - end of Feb) as I do for the remaining 8 months. All the "good stuff" (IMO, of course) comes out in this winter time frame, so my spending increases. Don't get me wrong... plenty of beers are bought over the summer, but I'm typically going for 12 pack cans of sierra summerfest or brooklyn summer as opposed to $8-15(+) bombers

Perfectly believable to an outsider and not at all condescending. This is the perfect response. I will be using this one.
