I have a hard time understanding the point to Black IPAs as well. I just picked up some Lagunitas Nighttime (which gets excellent reviews). And while it is a tasty beer, my mouth and brain kept thinking..."oh, there's the hoppiness" and a second or two later..."oh, there's the roastiness."

It was like someone just mixed an IPA and porter in a glass and served it to me. I didn't really experience anything unique...just a combination of two styles of beer I like. And I don't necessarily think the flavor profiles of each blend or compliment each other all that well. This has been the case with all black IPAs I've had, not just Nighttime.

I don't know if black IPAs are in my bottom three styles, but I'm still at a loss to describe them accurately.

Well, this is a somewhat subjective topic, given that there seems to be continual experimentation within styles. That being said, if I were forced to rank favored and least favored styles, it'd look something like this.

    Favorites
1.) Bocks (Eis-, doppel-, and plain ol' bock)
    2.) Dubbel/quad/BSDA (all technically synonyms)
3.) Toss-up between sours and yeasty wheat beers

    Least Favorite
1.) Anything hop-forward. I can't do those. Especially IPA, DIPA, and anything else that has PA in the name.
2.) English mild ales. I have only ever had these as imports in bottles, and I mainly get a flavor out of them I describe as "dirty sock". These may actually be fantastic fresh from a cask, and should I ever get to try that, I will revisit this opinion.
    3.) AAL

I love how "Sours" is a style, now, and none of you have had a Gruit.

How is DIPA the best, and Black IPA the worst?! That makes no sense.

    Pale Ales

    Bottom 3
    Saisons/Farmhouse Ales
    Pilsners
Hefeweizen (I actually enjoy the taste of some Hefeweizen beers but I've found out through trial and error that something in wheat/rye beer gives me extreme explosive diarrhea, thus I avoid them at all costs)

I don't even consider light lagers as beer so I won't even mention it on my lists.
