If you are doing ABV math I think you have a serious problem. If you cant drink with out doing math or knowing where your limit is with out thinkin, you may have a serious problem.

I do on work nights. I try on weekends. I failed this weekend Thanks to Toppling Goliath, EvilTwin, Lagunitas, Prairie Artisan Ales. Yumm and Spoiled. So many goodies out there hard not to go crazy. I Have been toying with only drinking what i brew To limit my spending. Hmmmm. CHEERS.

Again (and this is based on curiosity, not anger) I'm surprised by the opposition to simple arithmetic as a means to mentally anchor yourself--a process which would be based upon previous experiences of responsibly "knowing your limits" and establishing general self guidelines and control. That some choose to be more specific in defining this for themselves and others less so, doesn't necessarily mean the former camp has a "serious problem."

Do you look at your speedometer when you drive?

Drinking too much has consequences. What exactly is too much depends on the circumstances.

I'm not someone who's doing ABV math, but I can absolutely understand if someone else does. Some of us are really analytical and doing basic arithmetic is a quick and objective way to not go over a certain amount of alcohol consumption. More power to them.

Haha - funny you say this - but my dad got to know his car so well, that he could pretty much know his speed by the noise of the engine. It was a diesel. #europe

But I agree with you - these threads can be so f**king annoying because people can be so judgmental. Someone's mind works differently to mine, so that means they must have a problem. Sheesh.

I don't overthink the exact number of beers I drink. But then again I live in NYC and don't have or need a car, so drinking and driving isn't an issue for me. If it was, then you can bet I would add up the numbers much more carefully - and hopefully someone would see that as being responsible, not having "a problem dude you should speak to someone".

I may very well have misunderstood how people ment it. BUT When some one says "I will only give my self x amout of abv per day" That to me is more like getting your fix than knowing how to limit your self. In my mind it is just a weird way of looking at it. Thanks all!

ABV math was my method when i first got into the really big beers. I also introduced different variables to really dial in my estimate. I forget my formulas, but since I am an estimator for a living, doing some quick math wasn't really absurd sounding to me.

Now my tolerance is pretty good, so I just drink what i want and it's a non issue, as far as being able to perform at work. I usually stop when I "feel done" nowadays.

I think a math formula works the best. I count 14% ABV as one beer and limit myself to 6-8 per 12 hour session. So If I have 2 16 oz beers that are 7% ABV I've only had 1 beer and if I've had a a bomber that is 12% alcohol well really that is still only one beer because there is only one bottle unless you see two bottles than you obviously need to quit drinking.

Weekends, I like to indulge. Usually during the week I will drink 1-2 beers after work a few days of the week.

The extent of ABV math I ever do is "ABV > 8, this beer = 2 beers, this is a bomber, multiply beer count by 2".

Or they want a healthy liver. If you follow health guidelines about alcohol and pay attention to abv, you will only ever be lightly buzzed for 30 mins. I doubt that constitutes a "fix".
