I am a long time IPA/DIPA fan but found myself wanting a bit more. Barley wines seemed like a logical step forward. I just tried the green flash barley wine and fell in love (palate wrecker and west coast ipa are two of my all time favorites). I was wondering if anyone could advise me on some other hoppy american barley wines. I know very little about the style and am looking to take the plunge. Any advise is greatly appreciated!

Avery Hog Heaven and Troegs Flying Mouflan for me. They definitely toe the line between Barley and DIPA. Still have a nice hop punch, but also some sweetness to balance it out. I'm sure there are plenty more, but those are 2 of my favorites. If you want more hoppy BWines, stay towards the American side to start. Their English brethren are going to have lot more caramel, toffee sweetness.

Oh, and how could I forget Bigfoot! Perfect for fresh, hoppy drinking or mellowed out aging.

Many will suggest this, but Sierra Nevada Bigfoot fresh is awesome and quite hoppy. But, I would say a majority of the American barleywines, if drank fresh, will have a reasonable amount of hops to them and will satisfy your cravings.

Coming from IPA/DIPA you'll naturally be geared for American Barleywines (like you stated), so naturally the first response should be:

Out of the bunch, a couple of the off the shelve varieties I enjoy are Great Divide's Old Ruffian (and BA Old Ruffian), Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot, and Avery's Hog Heaven (really hoppy in my book for this style), but if I were honest, I'm really more into English Barleywines.

Too bad you're in DC, I was going to say if you're a west coaster, Alesmith Old Numbskull is excellent as well as HoTD DoggieClaws.

Stone Old Guardian wouldnt be terrible to try either.

Definitely bitter, but also creamy and smooth as well.

Stone/Bottleworks 13th tasted like a hoppy American barleywine to me and my friends.

    I vote Old Ruffian

You might want to look into some American strong ales as well. Something like a Lagunitas WTF
