The sediment evident in the bottom of a bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and other naturally conditioned beers is the yeast we use for bottle conditioning. Typically, the yeast lies tight and flat to the bottom of the bottle. As the beer is poured, the yeast will re-suspend making the beer’s appearance cloudy or slightly particulate but will not adversely affect beer flavor. If bottles are stored improperly (e.g. upside down or on their side) the yeast may resettle into what looks like a drop of pancake batter or vanilla ice cream and will be more apparent but will not affect the finished flavor of the beer.”

Many English Ales are bottle-conditioned -- I believe the aforementioned Fullers 1845* is one of them.

Pretty sure it is. Although I was referring specifically to PAs and IPAs (i.e. the "hoppier" stuff).

Although to get back at Bavarian beers a bit, somebody have any recommendations as to what would make for some good takes on the Helles/Dunkles and Pilsners from Bavaria for introductory/trading purposes? I was thinking something along the lines of Ayinger, Riegele, Schönramer and maybe Faust (in addition to some non-Bavarians for other styles like Uerige and The Monarchy and some Gose if I can get my hands on some).

I will give that Helles from ST a try as well, but I'm going to get a single first before committing to a six pack. Their non-stouts tend to be hit or miss for me.

They don't serve the dunkel at the top of the hill - only at the little biergarten on the way up. At least that's been the case every time I've been. I'd wager that's the big 'un.

Well, I did spend about 4.5 hours up there one year, and had drei Maß Doppelbock! :grimacing: Needless to say, the S-Bahn ride home was a sleepy blur...

    Prosit!!

Sad to say it's one trip around Munich I never took the opportunity to make. Someday, though.

    Fastenbier pron.
First time this year taking photos outside in my privat biergarten today! Finally it's sunny and warm enough for that.

I have had Fastenbier from the tap before, and now for the first time in bottle (like everyone else).

Also, I've been meaning to ask about Pyraser's Herzblut. Had it in Dinkelsbühl, couldn't stomach it. Repulsive! Then I checked the receipt... the price made my jaw drop. (There was no price in the shop, I didn't think it'd be so expensive for such rubbish.)

Is it just me or did something go wrong during the brewing process, or it's supposed to taste like that?

    This glassware works right?

Some "new" Andech's Doppelbock came in, dated October 27th, 2014. Good enough for me! It was like drinking dark breads straight from the glass. This was much more enjoyable than the one I had when Andech's first hit, not nearly as dry. A tad too sweet, but not cloyingly so. This was one of the better doppelbock experiences I've ever had.

I also picked up some Jever, with a best by of 12/2015. I was ecstatic. I only picked up four out of the six though, in case they were skunked (they were out of the case already). I've already had two, and will go back for more. Aside from on draft, this is probably the freshest Jever I've ever had. Driest pilsner I have ever had, and far hoppier than the Prima I recently bought. Insanely drinkable, and while quite hoppy, it still retained some stellar pils character in the finish.

Matt, finding fresh Jever is like a gift from God.

I took note of "...far hoppier than the Prima I recently bought..." Based upon all of the Prima bashing that is popular in the Germany forum (e.g., Prima is an IPL type comments) I was a tad surprised by your comment here. I will re-double my beer seeking efforts to see if I can find some Jever that was bottled in December 2014.

    Cheers!

Very nice! I just picked up two bottles at my place for $3.99 each, date code 3004, which sounds pretty close to what you have there. (No Rothaus, though) May I ask how much you paid up that way?

One of the first German new-wave craft beers I heard of was Pyraser's Herzblut, but I never tried any exactly because of the price. Sorry it didn't deliver.

I find the hoppiness between Jever and Prima very different. As you correctly point out, Jever is very dry. This, combined with a depth of bitterness, is usually described as herb in German. Prima is more aromatically hoppy and slightly fruity (i.e. far less dry) with a certain sharpness of character and hop haze.

EDIT: as far as IBUs go (which are hardly an accurate 1:1 measurement, but still...) Prima was recently recorded as having 52 IBUs and Jever around the low 40s.
