Mine did not look anything like that, it has only been sitting in the fridge for 2 weeks. Poured into a Stone pint glass.

    Cheers!

Good afternoon from now overcast central NH, it was a beautiful sunny morning and a great trip to the coast to complete an IP trade. Hope all of you fellow NBS participants are enjoy a little better weather than we have had on most of the past few weekends. I think it was a good trade on all parts and it will give me a couple of new to me beers to report back on later.

Once again this week I was back at White Birch Brewing in Hooksett, NH in hopes of getting the first run of Hop Session IPA from there new canning line but the technical gremlins were there also so hopefully the tech that was coming yesterday got everything sorted out.

My new beer this week is Bill's 42 Small Batch Ale, an Imperial Stout with a rum oaked aging. Coming in at 11.8% ABV it is a true Imperial Stout.

This beers pours a dark black with a creamy dark tan head when poured slowly into my tulip glass

The aroma is from the rum oak aging in the nose with a hints of chocolate from the dark malts.

The taste is that of a true Imperial Stout, a lot of complex flavor but you find the rum and the oak in the first taste but not an overpowering effect. The back end of the taste is of the chocolate flavors from the malts. In overall these flavors combine very nicely.

Now this beer has the mouth feel a stout should have thick and rich and very creamy.

All in all this is probably the best stout I have had from White Birch and they have made many good ones in the past. I'm planning a return trip and hopefully will be able to get a case of bombers to cellar away to have to share with good friends and fellow BA's in the future.

Until next Sunday lets all live life to it's fullest! Enjoy!

    Happy New American IPA Sunday!

Again did a short hike today, sunny, mid 50s, but the trail is pretty muddy. Picked these up about 2 weeks ago, I heard we have plenty in the one store I visit/buy most from last weekend. A nice brew on a nice day.

I was reluctant to post this one since it is not a new beer per se but it was the first time I had had it. Chimay Doree - ale brewed with spices - from Belgium. I prefer to post newly released beers on this thread. Please don't flame me. But anyway, the pour was a cloudy yellow color leading up to a lingering white fizzy head. Yup, Belgian toasted malts intermingle with some peppery spice but what I get more of is an orange or lemon zest character. Same for the taste. Light and refreshing body though. It might be nice on a mild spring day. However it did hit 40 degrees here in NH today so as far as I am concerned it was close enough.

    New Barrel Aged Beer Sunday

Greetings my bock brothers and saison sisters! Sun is shining in Central OH and dare I say, I might even see some green grass??? Hope everyone has a solid American Ale in their nonics, snifters, or flutes today. Happy NBS one and all!

    Peace, love, and malty-ness

Jackie O's Oil of Aphrodite- Rum Barrel

Aroma: Well...rum! Oaky, vanilla, woody character firmly asserts itself. Clean fermentation character. Not much but the rum barrel character. Not a bad thing but hard to pick up on the base beer.

Appearance: Inky black pour with jet black edging. Low tan head that retains well. Appears still in the glass.

Flavor: More vanilla, oak, and rum character. Light caramel, raisin, and burnt toast notes. Nice earthy bitterness due, in part, to the dark malts. Barrel character is firm, oaky, and continues to assert throughout. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste lingers with a bit of charcoal character.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation. Oily but not creamy or with any alcohol heat.

Overall impression: A big barrel aged stout. Hard to get much besides the barrel character. Good, but drinkability suffers a bit without a good base beer characteristic

Good evening all you NBSers. With the high 30's today it was time to get out and clean up some ice.
Got a little crazy which I tend to do with these things- the 52 yr old body doesn't keep up with stubborn younger thinking mind. So there goes the back. Unfortunately the medication isnt conducive to partaking in the really unique bomber of brew I had planned for this week. So it is with great sadness I must break my 6 new beer string this week. Fortunately age won't affect this brew so I'll be back with beer n music next NBS.
In the meantime enjoying all the beer and banter this wonderful NBS brings!
    Cheers all.

Greetings from a sunny and mild Jersey Shore. The 'stat's all the way up to 50 degrees today, Spring can't be far off, hopefully. Did I mention that more snow fell this week, twice times? Well, it did.:slight_frown:

Good morning all you fine folks, thanks to Cavedave for getting us started. A light snow falling
here in WMAss. That's OK as it is about sugaring time, seen a lot of branch lines and taps in trucks this week.
    Come on maples!
Today's treat is from Smuttlabs their Rye Stout. A fine stout, with great consistency.

Poured from a bottle dated 12/4/14 into a modified tulip glass.
A - Dark as a Rothko study in black, steady, relentless train of carbonation feeds into a 1/2" mocha froth that never subsides. Any lacing returns to the cap with time.
S - Cocoa, sweet malts, earthy grain quality, Interesting lack of a lead in the components that make up the nose. This could be describe as chameleon like, all those grains hiding in the open. As the beer warms an interesting blackberry note rises along with some anise.
T - Lightly roasted malts, a kiss of black strap, cocoa. A bite from the rye lurks, while a smoky element hangs like that wall flower hoping to join the party. Nary a hop element to be had.
M - Silky, a touch thin in body. Uniformed coating of the palate. lingering some time.
A slow exit with a grainy ever so slightly bitter finish as the calling card.
O - Quite enjoyable, smooth in body, just spicy enough. The execution is wonderful, The consistency of flavor, never ending creamy cap I found delightful. A fine stout for sure. Expressive but in a fine conversation kind of way.

    Cheers

    Hello all,

Another Sunday, another new saison. Today it's Glimmerglass by Ommegang. A spring saison, according to the bottle, at 5.4 ABV, brewed with sweet orange peel and pink peppercorns. The beer takes it's name from a NY lake named by Fenimore Cooper.

Poured into a teku from a 12 oz bottle, orange with a moderate foamy head. First thing that hits the nose is the usual Ommegang yeast, soon followed by the advertised sweet orange and just a touch of pepper. Taste follows the nose, with notes of both sweet and tart citrus and a moderate bready malt bill; the finish is clean with just a bit of pepper. Tasty and refreshing, though with a moderate mouthfeel, this beer is more substantial than a some of the session saisons out there.

I like this beer quite a bit, particularly enjoy how the pepper adds a dimension to the experience without dominating the conversation, as it does in Pepe Nero and Stone Saison, two attempts at the style I really did not enjoy.

Musical selection: Charles Ives's string quartets, because this weird dude really had it going!

    Cheers!

    Hello BA, happy NBS!!!!

Haven't had much time to participate in the past few weeks, a crazy work load coupled with some vehicle issues have put the kibosh on extra spending lately, and I just haven't been in the mood to attack my "cellar" stash, so I took a step back. However, I got something special for today and Jesus himself couldn't stop me from cracking one open (along with a few other things I may have sitting around).

First up today is the holy grail itself, Heady Topper.

Poured half into a snifter to get a good look at it, left the other half to be consumed from the can as is suggested by The Alchemist.

A: Surprisingly light and rather clear in color, I expected it to be a little darker given the aroma when cracking the can (I don't really know why, just my mind at work I guess). Thin, light head that dissipates quickly.

S: The nose is very strong, indeed. Heavy pine and hops and a light floral note set a nice precedent for the rest of the experience.

T: I will have no problem agreeing that this is the cleanest, most well refined example of the style I have ever had. It is super fruity (grapefruit and other citrus fruit), and super hoppy. Not terribly complex, but it ends with a nice peppery spice. Everything is super bold and well defined. Simply beautiful.

F: Feels just heavy enough and features great carbonation. Certainly nothing bad here.

O: This one is pretty hard to sum up. I've been waiting a long time to try this beer, as have many others. I went into this knowing that realistic expectations would lead to an overall better experience. It's an absolutely fantastic beer, no doubt about it. I don't, however, feel I need to go crazy to obtain more. As great as it is, in the end it is simply another beer I guess. I just can't help but wonder, will the second can really feel as special? Super glad to be able to cross it off my list, though.

Oh, and just for the record, it's dam good out of the can AND a glass......but make sure it's cold!

    Cheers!!!

This is a tough brew to rate. As Nate and Corey assured me, this beer is certainly worthy. Good appearance; nice, almost soft aroma. Nutty and boozy, but not overpowering; plenty of coffee and toffee from the malt.

Mouthfeel is exceptional. No hint that this is anywhere near 11.9%. And smooth and chewy. Not Ten-FIDY level; if Ten-FIDY is good egg-nog, then this is the cheap, off-brand egg-nog (still thick, but not that thick).

The tough part comes with grading the flavor. It's good; real good. But it doesn't have the depth of character of Parabola or the FW Anniversary series; it doesn't have the huge, roasty, chocolatey base stout of BCBS and others. It does everything well, but nothing exceptional, falling just a hair shy of the benchmarks in the style.

Ultimately, I think I'm leaving my rating for taste at 4.25 (which obviously dominates and dictates the overall score).

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/14936/55063/?ba=Roguer
    4.35 / -2.7%

Still way better than the Evan Williams version; still not worth $30, in my opinion. But worth cracking one for a special occasion.
