Just curious to see how many people use the sight for rating and why. I've been a member since October 2013, when I turned 21, and have rated 962 beers. It has become a hobby of mine and my friend @SonictheBeerhog. Love trying as many new beers as possible.

Sight is for seeing. I'd say most of us BA's use the site as a way to keep track of the beers we have drank. I like it for that reason as well.

Never rated anything. Just not interested in that part of it.

Do you read the ratings for indicators of what you might like?...

Agreed...however, I joined late in my craft-beer adventure, and so I had to backtrack and do some reviews by memory. When I retried some of the beers that were rarer, I found that I was more accurate than I thought I would be, but with some wild outliers...just like memory is supposed to be...lol...

I started tracking & ticking when I joined this site just over three years ago
The bottled beer range, say five years ago was very limited so the 1100+ beers is actually
isn't that different to the total beers I've had in the 20 odd years of beer drinking
Just a few cask beers that were guest ales or from freehouses
    can't be more than 150-200

I've rated fewer than 50 and reviewed hardly any. I also don't read reviews very often. Sometimes I read reviews after I try a beer to see if I was crazy or if others share my opinion. No offense to those committed reviewers, but most reviews on here sound almost the same with the same adjectives that seem cribbed from a million other reviews. I usually check in new beers on Untappd and give a rating there, just to have some sort of database. I do it from my phone and it's a quick way to interact with (some) real life friends who also use the app.

Anything that turns my beer appreciation into too much work ultimately defeats the purpose. I enjoy the dialogue about beer more than I enjoy trying to assign a numerical value to its merits.

    Whatever floats your boat. Cheers.

    Zero.

There's nothing I like more than broadcasting my opinions. But my sense of smell is so dull and my palate so uneducated that it would be a waste of anyone's time to read a beer review of mine.

Sometimes they sound cribbed from like five other reviews, however, there are some good reviewers and some less than great ones, some give it their all, and some write the most insane shit you'd ever think to write about a beer...I know that my review writing needs work, but I try not to do anything but give a simple review of what I truly think I am sensing...

I don't take this site's reviews terribly seriously anyway, because people's ratings of beers seem to include the scarcity or difficulty in obtaining it. That should have nothing to do with it.

1300+, but it's only a measure for tracking, like Untappd is. Here it's more to see where the beers I've had fall into the "Top" of their categories, like how many of the Top 250, what Top Saison's I've had etc etc.

I like seeing this too, just even looking at what beers are at the top of their style. I also like seeing top ranked beers in each state.

    155 on beer advocate ( since 1/1/14 )

1384 in my rating database ( since 10/15/10; includes BA ratings )

    I didn't rate before 10/15/10.

Why did I start rating beers?

After many years of not doing so, it became difficult to recall with any precision what my impression was of a specific beer and how it compares to others similar in style. I found that over time bias creeps in distorting the view of any given beer. Rates on the other hand, don't change, allowing me to see exactly what my impression was of a beer at that place and point in time.

Why did I start rating on BA?

After using this site for many years, I thought it was time to start giving back.

Including a backlog of about 50 - 70 reviews on paper, I have about 810 - 835 formal reviews, with another 146 that were rated without review comments.

As for why... beer for beer's sake holds no attraction for me.

This is a hobby, and the enjoyment of drinking is exponentially increased by taking time to evaluate my perceptions. The reviewing activity alone is enjoyable, but is elevated by the enhancement of my appreciation for the subtlety of the various qualia each beer presents.

Of course there are times when the enjoyment, of a good beer, is enhanced by the company one keeps. Having a record of what I like ensures a good beer will be paired with these experiences.

This is a well-constructed explanation. The bolded part particularly sparked my interest. Could you expound?
