I started rating here exclusively and now use Untappd and then enter the scores from there onto here now. I try to keep current but sometimes go weeks without entering on here.

I rate not so much to remind myself of whether I liked the beer (can always remember that), but to remind myself of the beer's flavor profile.

A few. There use to be a guy named Buckeye Nation, greatest reviews on this site. They were like fucking stories.

    Cheers!

Every review is a rating, but not every rating is a review. :grimacing: I only started doing reviews, because back in the day you had to review to keep a list. After cranking so many reviews (mostly with a 250 word minimum), I was kinda happy to just do a quick rating, and not have to take notes all the time at the bar. Now I often enter a quick score on Untappd, and then transfer it over here later. I still do some reviews, but I like just being able to rate. My score for a beer will be the same, whether a review or a rate, so I don't feel a rate has any less value than a review.

Before rating using the Beer Advocate 1-5 scale I would simply take notes on a beer's characteristics, placing it all down longhand in a pocket notebook (and sometimes transcribing those to a Word document or the like.) But I would seldom rate on any type of scale.* Maybe tack on a thought in passing such as: "Not bad" or "Worth a repeat visit."

*Around that time, I had professional brewer / beer judge friends who developed their own shorthand rating scale:

    1. I would drink this again.
    2. I would seek this out.
    3. I would neither drink this again -nor- seek it out.
    4. I would not drink this if it were handed to me as a kind gesture.

3 was pretty common for them, but 4 was so rare that I don't think they ever actually used it, since they considered it bad form to turn down something which was offered in friendship.

I'm only in the 60's, but I also haven't reviewed anything from (more than a couple weeks) before I joined.

I like the ratings, because it keeps track for me. Simpler than trying to remember what I liked and didn't.

Beer is a beverage. Beer is also a cultural concept. I'm uninterested in beer as just something to drink, or as simply a means of acceptance. These needs are satisfied via other means.

Beer has a range of qualities including sensual, experiential, social, and others. I do enjoy it for all of these qualities, to varying degrees, but most enjoy it for its sensual qualities.
