Hey moving from California to Lubbock, tx for work and just wanted to know if there are any fellow bas out here and if they would like to get together for a share or a pint. Any local knowledge on bars or bottle shops is appreciated as well.
    Cheers,
    Garrett jahn

I'm not living in Lubbock, but I do have ties to Lubbock. I'm going to shoot it to you straight. Lubbock is a bit of a beer desert, especially coming from a beer mega oasis such as California. But do not despair, things are slowly looking up. Of the places that I've been to, The Crafthouse has the best selection of beer on draft and in cans. Most of it is the heavy hitters from New Belgium, Founders, Uinta, Saint Arnold, and Oskar Blues, etc. There is a simi local brewery Wicked Beaver that they usually have on tap. The two beers that I have had from them were both bottled, and not that great. Way over carbed, but I would not count them out until you have at least tried them your self. They may have gotten things under control. Then there is Triple J. They brew their own beer, so there is that. It has been ages since I went there, and I remember the beer being decent. Nothing spectacular, but worth a try. The food was good when I was there as well, but some say it has gone down hill. Again, worth checking out to see what you think.

Bottle shops is a little different story. I have not found a really good bottle shop. Most of the time you will just want to go to the closest United Market Street. I did see that a Dallas brewery Deep Ellum is now making its way to one of the Market Street stores in Lubbock. They have some solid brews, mostly their IPA, DIPA, and I like there Blond for a nice summer drinker. Aside from that there is no Jester King. That is a big one that people ask about. But I will say this, if you are in to trading, make sure to keep lines open with friends you have in California. If you can get some Cali brews pretty easily, the world is your oyster on trading for some of the other goodies that we have in Texas, but don't make it to Lubbock. But you have to be open to trading. Other than that, I am hoping that some other BA's in Lubbock or familiar will chime in, and if I come across anything new I'll update you.

You have pretty much covered the basics of the Lubbock beer scene. I will add in the Spec's there does get some good stuff occationally. The bright side....you will not be fighting for any special releases as no one really looks for them there. The bad side...you will not get that many special releases. I have found some hidden gems every once in a while when I am up in Lubbock. I find myself up there a couple times a year due to in-laws.

Doc's is also decent off of Quaker(?).

With that said, I would not mind hauling beer up for you from Austin when I do make the drives....but that would not be too often.

Mainly the bigger breweries - like Deschutes and those type of places. I believe they also get Prairie so you may see some of those.

Specs does a lot of internal distribution as well - which means you may find more things that are not necessarily up there through normal distribution.

I went to Tech and go back for football games/weddings/work 6 or so times per year.

Spec's is the best place for bottles I've seen so far, Market Street is the more upscale grocery store and they have some good bottles too. Doc's on Quaker and the Loop is decent as well, but if you're near there Spec's is a half mile away and better. Crickets and Local (formerly Rocky's) near campus have some decent taps/bottles compared to the other bars in that area (Broadway - student bars). Local is also the first bar in that area of Lubbock to go smoke free I think.

I've heard great things about Crafthouse but haven't managed to make it. I think a buddy told me they had Avery Tweak there a couple weeks back, which is certainly a rarity in Lubbock. Capital Pizza in Tech Terrace has a decent list as well, nothing special, but at least 15-20 craft selections.

Basically, what was said before is true.

I am a Dallas transplant that went to school here and is now working and living here.

Specs is by far the best place for bottles and they normally get all their good stuff on Wednesdays.

We normally get all the Prairie Releases including Pirate Bomb, Bomb, Noir variants. Its not too bad being here.

Docs on Quaker will normally get all of these as well as they are owned by Specs.

Craft house for draft beers without question followed by Crickets and maybe Alamo Drafthouse.

I am a big sour guy as well, let me know if you ever want to have a tasting. Its really only me and about 2 other guys that get together for tastings and such. Cheers!

I assume your first name is Garrett? I ask solely because I mod that group and we generally do not add people from out of state into it and someone from Cali just asked to join with that name.

Simple reason being that 95% of the time someone is trying to join from out of state, they are wanting to trade for JK or want to promote their blog....and knowing you are moving to Lubbock, I am not concerned about that.
