i know enough about breweries and beer that BA average score is just a first glance guide for me. if i like the style and the brewery, i'll buy a 60~ BA score beer (especially if it's an unpopular style, read: lager).

So even if you like a beer and it scores a 3.5 on BA you won't buy it again (regularly)?

I don't go by scores just the words they write. Anything that shows signs of people misinterpreting the beer for what it should be. Words are worth more than scores to me. I reviewed a couple beers a few years ago with poor marks because I thought they went rancid(brett/lacto) and since revisited them and loved them. I find many people do that with Saisons/farmhouse ales and Wild Ales. I also enjoy a beer on here that scored a 68, worse than bud light.......

Sounds about right to me. If I don't score a beer at least a 4 (which I have done hundreds of times), why would I repeat buy something lower? There are so many flat out great beers I have already had, and many yet to try, so it would be a waste to have something again that is merely good.

I used to have a bad habit of reading scores and reviews prior to trying a beer for my first time, and I found that I often biased myself for or against a beer before even trying it. So, I started drinking beer first, grading it out, and then seeing what I thought of it relative to others. That said, I haven't enjoyed too many beers that are rated below a 92 on this site. Actually, I wouldn't go so far as to say I didn't enjoy them, but not enough to make a conscious effort to go back to that beer unless no other option is present. Just a general observation of my own tendancies. *shrug* I'm not a beer snob, but I wasn't blessed with an expansive palate, and the beers that I enjoy are still relatively limited in comparison to what's out there.

I used to look at Ba scores quite often before making a purchase-- and my cut off was a score of "B."
With the way reviews are inflated, if it can't score a B, it's gotta be pretty bad.

Now I don't check scores nearly as often because I've tried so much stuff that I know what I like-- some random ipa from an unknown brewery on the east coast or Midwest? Pass.
Is it brewed by Victory, Abita, or [insert other brewery I dislike]? Pass.
Is it a style I don't like? Pass.
Is it lacking bottling dates? Pass.

There is, of course, a part of me that intentionally buys shitty beer just so I can review them and drainpour half.

You must be reading the OP wrong. Its about checking scores on BA first before you try a beer and score it yourself.

I avoid American Pale Wheat Ales, but not based on the score. I read the reviews, and if its just a plain APWA with no hop forward punch/isnt Oberon, I dont buy it. Its more based on reviews not scores (god I sound like kzoobrew).

I was just wondering because I have only been into beer for about two years and am young with not a ton of money.. So I want to spend my money as wisely as possible. If I had a lot of money, I would just buy everything that I see that interests me. But, for now, I use BA to guide what I buy to make sure I don't buy a bunch of duds, which I have done many times before I joined BA, and have wasted a lot of money.

No, you read the comment you replied to wrong. He said that he had to give it a 4 to return to it. Yes, the OP said something else, but that is not what you responded to.

Oh, I just assumed that we were talking about exisiting ratings before buying the beer, since you know, that's what the tread was about.
