Hey all, I'm headed to a gathering of friends (post-wedding bachelor party, my buddy got married quickly and quietly recently) in Philly for a weekend in June. Place that's booked is in the Olde Kensington/North 3rd St. area. I was just wondering what I might be able to expect beer-wise over there. Is it a good spot for craft? Anything in particular I should check out? Any good restaurants around? Any other info about the area that an out-of-towner may want to know?

    Thanks in advance!

I was in Philly a couple of years ago with the same group of friends and we popped into Barcade. Had a blast playing NBA Jam and drinking pints of Two Hearted. Is Kraftworks that German Beer Hall near Barcade? If so, we hit that too, it was awesome. Big fire pits and 1L Bitburgers. I was in heaven.

EDIT: Just checked out Kraftworks, not the place I was thinking of, but looks pretty great. Thanks again.

Jesse, I am guessing that the German Beer Hall is Frankford Hall.

    Cheers!

For a good selection of PA locals, check out Standard Tap.

For a little local flavor try Atlantis, the Lost Bar (right across from Phila. Brewing Co.) and the El Bar (under the elevated train).

Neither have killer selection, standard crafts, but fun places.

Fun places are what we're looking for most (which is why Frankfurt Hall was so great last time). None of us are "whale hunters" but all enjoy quality craft beer. So as long as a spot has halfway decent pilsners, pale ales and a porters on draft, we'll be happy beer-wise. It's the space and place that will make it more enjoyable.

Those two are fairly small, local hang outs. The El Bar does live music at night, punk rock. Atlantis has a pool table and is basically the after-work-bar for the PBC brewery workers. If your there on a Saturday you can tour. They have a great tasting room, often free pizza, darts, pool, etc. The beer, well, it's free.

    For beer, as others noted:
    1) Memphis Tap
    2) Standard Tap
    3) Kraftwork

Jesse, aren't you going to inform folks that having Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald on tap is a 'plus'?

You're right, it really is a plus. Is that a year round brew? Hopefully it'll be there in June if so.
