I purchased a Dogfish Head Spigelau over the holidays. I think I paid ~$15 for it, and it was broken within 2 days...

That is completely untrue. Increasing the thickness of glass increases its R-value (thermal resistivity) given similar chemical compositions. The R value is temperature difference across the glass divided by the heat flux (which is what will cause the beer to warm). The real difference is Spieglau's are made of crystal (I believe borosilicate) glass which has a much higher R-value than ordinary glass that would be used for thick shaker pints.

Since there has been some broader glass discussion I have something to share.

First, I want to give a ‘shout out’ to @augiecarton since he was the first person that I read on BA which discussed this:

Use a canned shaped glass to drink moderately hoppy beers!

On surface, this may sound a bit screwy but it really works!! For some reason the inward slant of the top of the glass does a nice job of concentrating the aromas and thereby enhancing the flavor perception.

I now use my canned shaped glass to drink beers like Sixpoint Sweet Action, Sixpoint Beast Mode, my homebrewed beers of: Bitter Ale, Oatmeal Stout, American Porter, Brown Ale,…

The ‘bonus’ of a canned shaped glass is that it is rather sturdy so it should be resistant to breakage; I haven’t broken one yet.

Below is a picture of my can shaped glass containing Sixpoint Beast Mode:

I've also broken two of them and I've decided I'm not getting a third. The first one I got for free and was paper-thin. Was always really careful with it but then finally broke it against a cabinet above my sink one day while cleaning it. Purchased the second one which had noticeably thicker glass, had it for about a year until I broke that one. Kinda funny story about that. I was cleaning it and accidentally tapped it against the metal divider in my sink. It didn't break, just went *ting* and I thought to myself "Better not do that again." I rinsed it, put it on my drying mat and noticed I had missed some suds. Picked it up to give it another rinse and hit the divider in the exact same fashion as before and it cracked. Lol.

I've always thought it would be a brilliant bottling coup for some great brewery to start using Ball / Mason style sealed jars for their beers with raised logos in the glass...

Interesting. I didn't even know this type of glass existed. Perhaps this also explains why Alchemist insists you drink Heady Topper out of the can.

I have a couple of these and have not broken one yet, but they are thinner finer glass. And not to burst anyone's bubble because I still like them but you DO know that they were FIRST marketed as white wine glasses by Spiegelau... It did not go well apparently and they "re-branded" them with DFH as a specially created IPA glass... HAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm in marketing so more power to 'em but there isn't any special science to the shape of the glass that lends itself to IPA's other then money science.

This would conflict with that theory:

Yards Brewing Comany in Philadelphia has a Smoked Beer event every year (in September). One year they handed out can shaped glasses as their tasting glass. You can’t really read it in the photograph but it lists “Yards Brewing” on one side and “Smoke ‘Em If Yous Got ‘Em” on the other side.

It appears that Libby makes this type of glasses: http://www.amazon.com/Libbey-Can-Shaped-Beer-Glass/dp/B00C30G4M8

    Cheers!

It isn't like $10 is some magical low price. Try eBay or Dogfish's store, I've gotten them for $10 every time I've bought them.

Maybe $10 USD but definitely not $10 CAD. The issue with buying things online from an American site is that I also have to pay provincial tax and duty when it comes through the border. I live about 10 minutes from the border of Maine but I don't have a US postal box.

I have a canned shaped glass from Jackie O's I never use, maybe Ill start trying it.

I think I paid like $4/5 for all my spiegelau glasses because of an awesome store near my house.

They are very fragile. I rarely use them because of the breakage risk.

6 of them for 40 bucks on US amazon. Or a pair for less than 20. Might want to look into that. Not sure now it works there but I've purchased stuff from their European sites before.

The last time I ordered something from the US Amazon the CBSA tacked on more duty and tax than I would have preferred. I believe if the item has a value less than $50 USD then they don't bother with duty. May have to check into that. Thanks!

Also saw the post that you're close to the border, don't know if there's any around that area but look into shipping to Amazon lockers. They will leave your stuff at places like a university or 7-11s, certain other big box stores have them and you can pick up your items for their lockers with a code they will send you.

Interesting. Never heard of that before! I'll have to look into it.

    Thanks again!
