St. Bernardus is not a Trappist brewery.

This the reason the man in the pictures is not wearing a Monk hat.

They used to brew Westvleteren for the Trappist Monks of Westvleteren.

Shortly after the Second World War, the Trappist Monastery St.Sixtus in Westvleteren gave a license to the St.Bernard.
The brew master from Westvleteren, Mathieu Szafranski (from Polish origin) became a partner in the brewery and brought along the recipes, the know-how and the St.Sixtus yeast strain.

During a period of 46 years they brewed and commercialised the beers, while the monks continued to brew for themselves.

In 1992 the license came to an end and since then St.Bernardus are brewing the same beers, with the same recipes, but under a different brand name: St.Bernardus.

My bad. I suppose I didn't see the trappist "seal" anywhere on the box.

Bought three bottles last weekend at De Caigny, putting some in the cellar to age, going to open the other one soon!

Just found out these are supposed to hit limited FL stores in early June. I work in on-premise retail, our cost is going to be in the $125/6 750ml range. For those who were inquiring some months back...

I picked up 2012 bottles at Bier Thirty and Homebrewstuff in March if you are looking for that vintage as well. I think Homebrewstuff might have had a 2011 as well.

Yeah they both still have some bottles and more 2013 are coming as well in a week or two. Not sure if I just like it better fresh or if the 2012 was better to me or different barrels. Either way it's great.
