cl3 nailed it. GIS Professional here. When I need a break from the every day GIS work, I do Brewery/Beer-related maps.

It would be nice to see the breweries that are coming soon (only breweries that have a location and are in the build out process). Maybe use a different icon too...

I've always been a little unclear what the distinction between Brewery and Brewpub is. Is it just that Brewpubs serve food on site? If so - Urban Growler should be a Brewpub, not a Brewery on the map.

You could start to get really complicated a build a tool that would allow you to filter out by certain categories such as:

    Sells Growlers
    Patio/Outdoor Seating
    Bike Racks
    Family Friendly
    Dog Friendly
    etc.

    Could be cool

Yeah, Brewpubs serve food and their beer is available only onsite, not on the shelves in stores.
I changed Urban Growler to a Brewpub - you are right!

Urban Growler is not a brewpub. they have tap accounts.

Food is not the distinguishing feature of brewpubs, it's that they can sell other people's beer onsite, and have a liquor license, but cannot distribute to others.

several breweries have kitchens but cannot serve other peoples beer or have a liquor license (surly and urban growler and the only ones currently in the metro AFAIK)

Under Minnesota Law, brewpubs, unlike taprooms, can have full liquor licenses and multiple restaurant/bar locations, but they cannot sell beer for off-site distribution at liquor stores or other bars. Food sales have nothing to do with the distinction. Urban Growler has a taproom and is not a brewpub.

Edit: billhelm beat me to it.

Dubh Linn in Duluth makes their own beer (though it doesn't seem to be the primary thrust of the operation). Not sure if you want to include them. Carmody seems to be a similar situation and they're included, so it probably makes sense.

This is really well done, by the way.

I wasn't sure how to categorize them, because they do a lot of contract brewing though South Shore Brewing. Does it sound like they pilot brew their beer, then send the recipe off to South Shore?
If so, I was trying to leave off the map, places that contract brew.....

It sounds like a similar arrangement to what Big Wood has with Cold Spring or what Fulton has (had?) with Steven's Point: Brew the small batches in house and client brew the big sellers at a larger facility. Similarly, Bad Weather will continue to brew for bottling at Lucid even after its own brewery and taproom opens. I wouldn't even say that Dubh Linn uses a pilot system, because that implies that the purpose is to develop beers to be brewed in larger batches. Dubh Linn is happy to brew most beers in small batches but resourceful enough to utilize contract brewing when it stumbles upon a hit.

I would include Dubh Linn on the map if I were you. It is a real, visitable brewery even if the bulk of its volume is contract brewed.

Looks really good, but you are missing Gun Flint Tavern and Brewpub in Grand Marais.

Also, I don't know if you missed it, but the two problems I reported earlier in this thread with Pryes & Steel Toe are still there.

Great map, I visit my family in the Twin Cities often, and was about to post a thread looking for advice on where to go for good local beer and food. Problem solved! I will still take any advice from the locals. FYI my Parents are in Edina.

    Cheers, and thanks in advance!
