Used to enjoy Black & Tans many years ago. Although DON'T order one in Ireland. (Look up the term if you need further explanation.) I made that mistake when I was in my early 20s. I've also enjoyed plenty of snakebites in my day. I enjoy cider but it's too sweet for me to enjoy on its own usually. And that's about the only thing I can imagine adding to my beer besides more beer. (Okay, maybe coffee....)

In some Irish American joints, ordering a black and tan will earn you a request to call it a half and half instead.

Back before craft brew was so prevalent I used to drink lots of 'em, typically composed of Guinness and Bass Ale.

EDIT: I got scooped by FutureJack!

Correct me if im wrong but I believe you call it a half and half. Just like you would order a car bomb, not an irish car bomb.

I've made a black and tan, but it wasn't with Guinness.

To be honest I'm not sure - I only really came across black and tan as a drink when I moved to the US

What, no mention of Boilermakers? With the shot glass dropped into the mug? Amateur hour

Another one that comes to mind from uni - not really a cocktail (as that implies some level of pleasantness) - was the "dirty pint".

Normally on someone's birthday or after something rugby-related. Everyone would buy an assortment of shots and pour them into an imperial pint glass - probably up to about the 1/2 to 2/3 mark. It would be topped off with beer, and a shot of baileys to make the whole lot curdle. Then the victim would have to down the lot. Extreme drunkenness would soon follow. And then usually some vomming

Note: If you are ever in Ireland or an authentic Irish pub, DO NOT order an Irish car bomb.

I ordered one and got reamed by a bar tender who had numerous family members killed by real car bombs.

I don't like that bar anymore.

I enjoy Black and Tans. Some combinations of porters/stouts and pale ales/lagers really compliment each other well.

I used to do ICBs in college and I've tried a Snakebite before.

Another fun beer equation is the PBR Splash. One shot of Framboise and then fill the rest of the pint glass with Pabst. I used to have a bartender who would make us those on dollar PBR pint days and she never charged us extra. It is actually a good fruit beer at an unbeatable price.

    Good observation!

If we include boilermakers, then I'm up to "2" :grinning:

...though for the most part, I agree with this...

Worst name for a drink ever. That's akin to calling a beer and bourbon a "9/11" or a "Beheaded Journalist" Or how about a "Newtown Shooter". It would be bad enough if American bars used those terms, but can you imagine going overseas and finding a bunch of Irish teenagers yucking it up and getting hammered on Boston Marathon Bombers? Not a good look.

I'm not overly PC, but I just happen to find that one particularly crass. Probably because I have a good friend whose father was a police chief of some sort (I don't know the terminology) in Belfast and part of his morning routine was checking underneath his car before he left the house. I just find Irish Car Bombs to be the epitome of Ugly Americanism.

Car Bomb, I think the because it is attributed it to a certian thing in history it causes some hard feelings when the irish is added. Of course im also anti PC but thats just me. I think the world would be a much better place if eveyone lightned up a bit. Granted I know its not that simple.

When I was an impoverished grad student in the mid 90s, I drank at this place that offered $2 pints of Guinness mixed with a lager (not Harp, I honestly forget). By comparison, Guinness alone was $4 a pint at the same place.

It was a no-brainer to drink the concoction. Also, I'd regularly petition the bartender to tap-off one Guiness for me and one lager for my buddy (who did not like anything dark) for a total of $4 since it was essentially the same amount of beer. Occasionally, they would accomodate us - usually late in the evening.

I'm also anti-PC on a lot of levels, but this isn't about being PC, it's just about being respectful. I don't think the NI troubles are yet in a position to be consigned to history.
