nah, your right man. Thats normal (the ballgame scenario). This is a special situation. If I'm going over to a good friends, I'll bring a couple craft beers for myself and everyone. If im going to a party and my buddy brings a 30 rack of PBR i'll crush them and play some pong without being like "you fool! I only drink double IPAs and BA stouts!". Being a snob/dick is a problem that is toxic to ANYTHING, beer is just one of them. Thats why I said it was whack you were talking down to somebody, even if he was being a snob too. Two wrongs don't make a right and being a snob about not being a snob is a new phenomenon I thought I would point out. I did come in hot, though, and for that I apologize. One singular post doesn't indicate your whole character, so my bad.

This thread was about a wedding and the question was raised if it was "rude" to bring a bottle of good beer to said wedding. I say no its not. Nobody can read his mind and tell why he brought it, even if it is whack to think drinking the available selections is beneath you. We can agree on that. I was simply saying liking beer enough to bring some you like isnt rude unless you MAKE it rude with your own actions.

Is that really how it would be construed by the hosts? seems like it would vary based on who they were. Isn't bringing a bottle of fine wine or bubbly common practice? Is beer too low class to be acceptable in this scenario?

these are serious questions, as I have never been to a wedding. Myself and my buddies are a dangerous combination of young (early 20's) and bad at long-term relationships :slight_frown:

Since it is 10:30 here (PST), and we are all on a beer community site, I assume we are all presently drinking beer. Is this the online version of a barroom argument? Both sides seem to be contradicting themselves, can't we all just get a pitcher and jam out to Wings or something?

This discussion has been had many times.
A wedding I would say it is bad form to bring a bottle of anything to the reception.

Bringing something to a party depends upon what kind of party. When you are younger parties tend to consist of everyone bringing beer, wine, booze etc. Then it is certainly proper to bring what you would want to drink. I would suggest a 6 pack of what you want to drink and a six or 12 pack for the masses (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Sam Adams seasonal 12 pack are perfect for this) the same holds true for most BBQ or pool party.

Now if you were going to a dinner party or "a more adult party" the right think to do would be to bring a gift for the host. It is a gift, so what the host likes should be a consideration. If they were beer heads a good bomber would be appropriate. But wine flowers etc are all appropriate. (As my mom taught me, never show up somewhere empty handed )
But remember this is a gift so the host is under no obligation to open it at the party.
Under these circumstances it would be rude to bring beer or wine to drink yourself regardless of whether or not you plan on sharing.

I guess if the groom or bride was interested in beer there would already be good beer there. Chances are they like wine and you can have some decent vino or you can always drink a decent bourbon like Basil Haydens? It seems as though it would be hard to have a bad time at a wedding regardless of beverage choice. Bring one of your options as a gift and hope he cracks it, I guess haha

No judgement whatsoever here, but unless your friend is the bride and she's an ultra-hip hophead herself, i would recommend not doing ANYTHING that could remotely draw people's attention away from the day that is supposed to be all about her. Assuming your friend is the groom, i would think twice about it if you don't want him dissappearing from boy's night out. Jus' sayin.

If I were the host and had paid for an open bar I would certainly be offended if I saw any of the guests bring their own. I wouldn't let it spoil the day but I'm gonna remember it.

Bad move. Just drink what's there.
Imagine if a guy brought his own bottle of Napa Valley Cabernet to the wedding because he didn't wanna drink the Cabernet they were serving.

I could not agree more. I'll be turning 35 this year, so maybe I'm just an old man shaking his fist at young punks, but if someone had done this at my wedding I would have called them out for being a dick.

As the bride scowled from across the room, and the OP was oblivious to all social cues except for the ones right in front of him.
