What's with the Fernsehbier review...? Have I been absent too long ?

Ha, as I typed that out, I thought, "I wonder how long it'll take @Stahlsturm to pop up and voice his displeasure?" Question answered. Feel free to copy/paste into the Fernsehbier thread if you like:slight_smile:

In Germany nearly everyone makes at least a decent wheat beer, but in America it's a little bit harder to come by. Can you think of good non-Ferhsehbiere options that make their way across?

We can get Plank Weizens here in SC. You seen them in VA?

I've never seen Plank, but I'm still exploring. A local place has Andechs, which I think means they can get their hands on Rothaus which means they can get their hands on Traunstein, yes? Perhaps I'll check in with them next time I go. Unfortunately their policy is you must commit to purchasing the entire case if you special order something, and even more unfortunately the cost can be prohibitive.

Edit: Matt, a short story. One of my local beer retailers contacted me last Thursday that they finally received their shipment (a case) of Fastenbier. When I walked into the store Joe opened the case for me and handed me one bottle. I asked: can I buy more than 1 bottle or are you limiting purchases to 1 bottle?". Joe replied: "you can buy the whole case." I responded: "I can't afford the whole case."

That whole case would have costed me $110.:grimacing:

The thing about Kellerbier, Zwickl and esp. Landbier always makes me mad. Though I am sure, not only the franconian beer culture can't be categorized with the US style system. For me, it fails all the time as soon as it is applied to traditional beer cultures and styles. I mean, see belgian styles, see czech styles, or my favorite example, biere de garde!
I only find it funny though that so many try to find logic in something that has a logic all of its own.

Even as a non Weizen drinker I know many better ones but it's the "make across" part that I cannot answer. I mean, even most Americans don't know what makes it across 2 states over (hence this forum :grinning: ), how could I possibly know which of the many breweries around here are distributed in the US ? You'll have a bitch of a time finding Plank 30 km away from the brewhouse here in Bavaria but he's exported to Japan and the US.

nope. schlenkerla starts everywhere i have seen it in franconia at around 15euros case, even more for the urbock. it also is an expensive beer in its native region. still 110 us dollars seems surreal.

And what, dear Lurchus does that have to do with me and what I write about "around here" ?

because i,dear stahlsturm, highly doubt that schlenkerla is somewhere else cheaper than where it is produced. ok,it could be, it is this way with bottled pilsner urquell which is cheaper in hamburg than in a shop in plzen. but schlenkerla is family owned and not part of a big idiotic business, so i thought such idiosyncrasies would not apply. plus it would annoy me since i bought it all the time.

Yeah, that's the rub. You seemed to be giving him a hard time about drinking Fernsehbier, but he might not have much else available to him. Non-conglomerate options would probably be Schneider Weisse, Weihenstephaner, Ettaler (? not sure of ownership), Erdinger, and maybe Andechs or Plank? Franziskaner, Paulaner, and Hofbräu (state-owned) are not bad starting points, IMO of course.

I happily drink Fernsehbier (along with the non-conglomerate options). Very few US-made versions can even touch a lot of the fernsehbier rendtions of many styles.

It's easy for others to snipe when they have ideal local options. For many others, including myself, it's not so simple.

FWIW, my favorite German brewed Hefeweizen beers that I purchase in the US:

    · Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

    · Ayinger Bräu Weisse

    · Andechser Weissbier Hell

    · Schneider Weisse

    · Edelweiss Weissbier

    · Tucher

    · Erdinger Urweisse

    · Weltenburger

    · Etc.

I do drink Franziskaner from time to time but for my palate it is just an OK beer. The majority of my money for German brewed Hefeweizen beer goes to Weihenstephaner.

    Cheers!

Apparently I have been away for too long... C'mon man, you know what it looks like when I'm giving someone a hard time  I don't care what anyone drinks but a Franziskaner review in a place like BA is just fundamentally wrong

Seriously? If a fransizkaner review was the only thing wrong w this site that would be pretty amazing!!!

Ignore Stahlsturn, he loves to hate, in fact I think he'd be quite unhappy if he didn't have anything to complain about; a German through and through:slight_smile:

I wasn't opposed to your post except that I think it would have been helpful to also add in a few choices that he should seek out.

I love Stahlsturm's posts. I'd call him our resident Forum Curmudgeon but I wouldn't want to upset all the rest of us who are vying for that title.
