    As an obvious non-German, perhaps a little light could be shed on which particular beers are okay to discuss? Fransizkaner Hefe is obviously out, but as long as it's Oktoberfest I can drink Spaten festbier, right? Spaten Helles seems to have been mentioned as a perfectly good example here before, but maybe should I follow it up with a guilt-laced chaser? Hacker Pschorr and Paulaner are non-starters, surely?

    Munich beers are out for Franconians and Oberpfaelzer. Franconian (and most other beers) are out for Muenchner. Koelsch is out for Duesseldorfer; Alt out for Koelner. Masskruege and ceramic mugs are out for Prussians. Etc., etc., etc. To say nothing about how Faessla's beers are out for Keesmann devotees; Spezial's out for Schenkerla regulars; etc., etc. (Hyper)regionalism is very much alive and well throughout Germany. And that's not such a bad thing....

    I suppose not...although I wonder what exactly we're to talk about!

    @herrburgess did a nice beginning summary:slight_smile:
    You can talk about whatever beer you want lol (or why bayern münchen is evil incarnate). If you bring up Spaten @MattRiggs will surely agree with you but @Stahlsturm might bring out his pitchfork:wink:
    There are some large breweries that make good beers.

    All of them.
    The guilt would come (or not) from knowing that Franziskaner and Spaten are from the same brewery.

    Some would argue that these are all the same topic.

    I was in Schlenkerla chatting with some locals, two older ladies and an older gent who were there together. In the middle of our conversation, the man leaned over to me and whispered that if he had his choice they'd all be in Mahr's right now.

    The irony was intended:wink: Franziskaner hefe is a no-no, but we're all free to fawn over the Ofest...that comes from the same brewery. Right.

    Yep, AB-InBev no less. I think Stahlsturm sees this as the equivalent of a Blue Moon review on BA, that's all.

    In fairness, there is no-way no-how Stahlsturm would fawn over Spaten's Oktoberest or any other beer they put out.

    He probably whispered it so the ladies (who prefer Schlenkerla and wanted to be there) wouldn't hear it. :wink:

    EDIT: It never failed to delight me to see a group of old silver-haired ladies hanging out in Schlenkerla or Spezial in the early afternoon drinking a few Seidla. Just one of the many, many things that makes Franconian/Bavarian beer culture so great (loosening up normally uptight (not-so-)little old ladies).

    I think his guilt should really come from drinking the Hofbrau Weizen from a nonic glass! :grimacing::stuck_out_tongue:

    Well, the detail you missed is that those who "fawn" over the Okto also like the Franziskaner -- as well as those who turn up their nose(s) at the Franzi do so to the other Spaten products too. At least the consistency is complete. :wink:

    By the way, could've been worse -- I could've drank it from a boot. But at least the labeling would've been right.

    You know... I think I have a couple Erdinger Weizen glasses languishing on a shelf in my garage... maybe it's deal time. :wink:

    Weizen in a bottle less than 0,5l already makes my head spin. The inadequate glassware is a lesser evil because a proper glass would look silly with the miniscule serving potion in it.........
