Not that I can think of. Apex is a bit controversial, because of the price point they place on certain beers, and because of some of the more questionable practices perpetrated by the owner. At least that's the take some people have, including myself. On the other hand, the tap selection is unbeatable, and the bottle selection there is terrific as well.

The problem with Portland, is that there are just so many fantastic places to go grab a beer, it's hard to narrow down the selection. Generally, most folks either limit themselves to certain areas of town (see the pub crawl options), certain types of beers they want to try (sours, strong ales, saisons, lagers, etc.), or to places accessible by public transportation or near their hotel.

That's great to hear - I'll drink freely as I find it then :grinning:

Rogue is the biggest one I can think of that out-of-towners will frequently flock to because they know the name. They also own Green Dragon, which can be appealing because it has 50 taps and is across from Cascade, but I'm often disappointed by the selection and sometimes frustrated with the service. However, with that many taps there's usually at least something worth trying.

I think the OP does a good job of highlighting some of the more distinct breweries which you might regret missing. The post mentioning "legacy breweries" is a good hint though - they're mostly places which have contributed immensely to Portland beer at one point, but in 2015 they're either widely available or don't stand out much, which doesn't necessarily mean they're not good. I'd put Bridgeport in that category as well. All that said, nothing wrong with going to Widmer, and certainly nothing wrong with going to breweries not on that list.

Just wanted to send a thank you in the direction of OP and those in this thread who replied to my previous questions.

Had a successful day trip in the Gorge out to hike Multnomah and continued out to Hood River. Stopped at pFriem per recommendations- good burger, great fries, and a triple ipa that was one of the best I've ever had within the style.

All in all a successful trip, so I appreciate the help. Cheers, Portland!

Hey @guajolote, today is the first day of spring. Do you want to retire this thread and start a new one?

I'ma try to get to it tonight. Definitely adding the "newcomers" section (breweries opened in the past year? Six months?). Still on the fence about the "Legacy breweries" section (Widmer, Portland, BridgePort, McMenamins), since pretty much none of them are spots BAs would recommend to an out-of-towner, unless maybe they were in PDX for more than a week.

Also, probably moving Breakside to the "must hits," and putting Occidental into the recommended, since they do outstanding lagers, and it'll get some St. John's love into the thread.

Thoughts? Speak now or forever hold your peace (until the next update, at least).

Agree with everything. Would leave out legacy section given you have a restriction on amount of text.

I know this has been discussed before and maybe ruled out since not necessarily Portland, but I really like the idea of one line for "universally recommended outside of PDX day trip: Hood River" and putting all the Hood River breweries in that line. No major descriptions necessary. So many of the visitors we see on this forum are here for several days plus, and the drive to and from Hood River and including the experience there is so quintessentially "Oregon" I think we have to consider adding it.

Is the Deschutes Pub really a must visit? I would say put it under highly recommended.

I would say so, because you get to try several of their beers, many of which are never bottled.
While who exactly the top 5brewers in Pdx are is quite debatable, I'd venture that a vast majority on here would include deschuttes, I know I would.

Regarding the character limit and how it cramps your ability to add things, perhaps we could change it up by creating some google docs. Instead of typing out the names of all the must hit breweries we could simply have one link to a spreadsheet that lists the brewery, location, normal hours, website, etc. Heck, you could also leave it open for others to edit, and have a field for "noteworhy beers" that people could use to make a note of something out of the ordinary currently pouring at those locations.

Like I said, it's just a hazy Monday morning thought, but it could potentially free up a bunch of space and allow you to include more things like "popular day trips to the gorge/coast/valley" or whatever.

Same here, visiting in early June!

Question, is it still wet and soggy for hiking in early June or will it be fine? GF and I will be doing a few day hikes.

If hiking is something that interests you, please do not let the weather reputation deter you. With the low snow-pack this year, winter hiking has been fantastic and access to higher elevations will be available much earlier this year. If you're just interested in doing lower elevation stuff in the forests surrounding the gorge, I'd argue that soggy weather is ideal for that!

Hey Everyone, planning a week long trip with the girlfriend, and planning to visit all of the recommended taprooms, bars and pubs. Based off a recommendation here I'm thinking of trying AirBNB. Based on what I see on the maps the Northwest District seems like a pretty good area to stay (we'll be using public transport). Thinking of booking a stay on NW 23rd ave, which is apparently 1 block away from a streetcar stop; any input on if this would be a good area to stay travel-wise and beer wise?

    Any input is greatly appreciated!
